High arsenic (As) contents have been reported in numerous Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary (KPB) clays worldwide including that from Spain (at Caravaca and Agost) and N. Zealand (at Woodside Creek). The Deccan Traps (India) enormous volcanism is one of the interpretations which have been offered to explain this anomaly. This report shows that the estimated surface densities of As in the boundary clays in Spain and New Zealand strongly contradict that anomalous As was sourced by this volcanic event.

The ‘Every Earthquake a Precursor According to Scale’ (EEPAS) medium-term earthquake forecasting model is based on the precursory scale increase (Ψ) phenomenon and associated scaling relations, in which the precursor magnitude is predictive of the mainshock magnitude , precursor time and precursory area . In early studies of Ψ, a relatively low correlation between and suggested the possibility of a trade-off between time and area as a second-order effect. Here, we investigate the trade-off by means of the EEPAS model. Existing versions of EEPAS in New Zealand and California forecast target earthquakes of magnitudes M > 4.95 from input catalogues with M > 2.95. We systematically vary one parameter each from the EEPAS distributions for time and location, thereby varying the temporal and spatial scales of these distributions by two orders of magnitude. As one of these parameters is varied, the other is refitted to a 20-year period of each catalogue. The resulting curves of the temporal scaling factor against the spatial scaling factor are consistent with an even trade-off between time and area, given the limited temporal and spatial extent of the input catalogue. Hybrid models are formed by mixing several EEPAS models, with parameter sets chosen from points on the trade-off line. These are tested against the original fitted EEPAS models on a subsequent period of the New Zealand catalogue. The resulting information gains suggest that the space–time trade-off can be exploited to improve forecasting.

Tarawera volcano (New Zealand) is volumetrically dominated by rhyolitic lavas and pyroclastic deposits, but the most recent event in AD 1886 was a basaltic Plinian fissure eruption. In March 2019 a swarm of at least 64 earthquakes occurred to the NE of Tarawera volcano, as recorded by the New Zealand Geohazard Monitoring Network (GeoNet). We use seismological analysis to show that this swarm was most likely caused by a dyke that intruded into the brittle crust between depths of 8–10 km and propagated toward Tarawera volcano for 2 km at a rate of 0.3–0.6 m s−1. We infer that this was a dyke of basaltic composition that was stress-guided toward Tarawera volcano by the topographic load of the volcanic edifice. Dyke intrusions of this nature are most likely a common occurrence but a similar process may have occurred during the 1886 eruption with a dyke sourced from some lateral distance away from the volcano. The 2019 intrusion was not detected by InSAR geodesy and we use synthetic models to show that geodetic monitoring could only detect a ≥6 m wide dyke at these depths. Improvements to geodetic monitoring, combined with detailed seismological analysis, could better detect future magmatic intrusions in the region and serve to help assess ongoing changes in the magmatic system and the associated possibilities of a volcanic event.

Our collaboration involves groups in Denmark, the U.S.A. Spain and of course New Zealand. Combining ground-based and satellite (IUEandHST) observations we aim to determine accurate and precise stellar fundamental parameters for the components of Magellanic Cloud Eclipsing Binaries as well as the distances to these systems and hence the parent galaxies themselves. This poster presents our latest progress.

The Type I simple cold block device was described by Bullivant and Ames in 1966 and represented the product of the first successful effort to simplify the equipment required to do sophisticated freeze-cleave techniques. Bullivant, Weinstein and Someda described the Type II device which is a modification of the Type I device and was developed as a collaborative effort at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Auckland, New Zealand. The modifications reduced specimen contamination and provided controlled specimen warming for heat-etching of fracture faces. We have now tested the Mass. General Hospital version of the Type II device (called the “Type II-MGH device”) on a wide variety of biological specimens and have established temperature and pressure curves for routine heat-etching with the device.

This cytochemical study was designed to investigate early metabolic changes in the aortic wall that might lead to or accompany development of atherosclerotic plaques in rabbits. The hypothesis that the primary cellular alteration leading to plaque formation might be due to changes in either carbohydrate or lipid metabolism led to histochemical studies that showed elevation of G-6-Pase in atherosclerotic plaques of rabbit aorta. This observation initiated the present investigation to determine how early in plaque formation and in which cells this change could be observed.Male New Zealand white rabbits of approximately 2000 kg consumed normal diets or diets containing 0.25 or 1.0 gm of cholesterol per day for 10, 50 and 90 days. Aortas were injected jin situ with glutaraldehyde fixative and dissected out. The plaques were identified, isolated, minced and fixed for not more than 10 minutes. Incubation and postfixation proceeded as described by Leskes and co-workers.
