Nowadays, there is a large demand for smart textiles by consumers. Smart textiles have different functions, and can provide comfort, safety and protection. In this study, electro-conductive woven cotton fabric is prepared in two steps. The cotton fabric samples are first impregnated and padded with a polyvinyl alcohol solution of 5% for multiple cycles (1, 3, 5 and 7 cycles) and dried. Then, silver nanoparticles are deposited onto the fabric through magnetron sputtering technology. The coated samples are examined using a Fourier transform infrared spectrometer, scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The ultraviolet blocking, infrared reflection, electromagnetic shielding, and antibacterial properties are evaluated, as well as the contact angle, light transmittance and electrical conductivity. The results show that a polyvinyl alcohol film is successfully formed and the cotton fabric fibers are stuck together through hydrogen bonds. The light transmittance is increased after the polyvinyl alcohol pretreatment. After undergoing seven cycles of coating with polyvinyl alcohol, the silver nanoparticles-coated samples show large contact angle of 127.6°, excellent ultraviolet blocking property, a high infrared reflectivity of 30%, electrical resistivity of 1.46 × 10–6 Ω·m, electromagnetic interference shielding effectiveness of −20 dB and antibacterial efficacy of >99.5%. Compared to the untreated and silver-coated cotton without impregnation of polyvinyl alcohol, the silver nanoparticles–polyvinyl alcohol-coated cotton fabric sample has excellent performance, which makes it a promising textile with a multitude of protective properties.

The popular use of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) in commercial textile products that inhibit odor- and/or infection-causing bacteria has continuously raised concerns about their washing durability. The poor durability not only deteriorates the antibacterial performance, but also results in unwanted leaching of NPs into washing solutions. In this study, we showed how the incorporation location of Ag NPs—interior vs. exterior of cotton fiber—governs their durability against consecutive simulated home launderings. The superior washing durability of interior NPs was confirmed. The Ag losses after 50 laundering cycles for interior and exterior systems were 16% and 63% in water and 24% and 78% in detergent solution, respectively. The cotton fabric containing interior NPs predominantly released ionic Ag, whereas the fabric containing exterior NPs released particulate Ag.

Abstract In this study, intumescent flame retardant coating of polyethylenimine/phytic acid (PEI/PA) with gradient structure was constructed on cotton fabric through facile layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly method. The LOI value of coated cotton fabric reached over 40% indicating excellent flame retardancy. Reasonable controlling the LBL assembly process of PEI/PA coating brought less influence to the physical properties of cotton fabrics. And the coated cotton fabric revealed good flame retardant washing durability. Thermogravimetric analysis results of coated cotton fabrics showed that PEI/PA flame retardant coating changed the thermal decomposition process and promoted char formation revealing the obviously condensed phase flame retardant action. SEM images of char residues revealed that PEI/PA flame retardant coating promoted to form the intumescent flame retardant (IFR) char layer showing obvious IFR action. This research provides novel strategy for the development of high-efficiency flame retardant cotton fabric with good durability and physical properties using simple LBL assembly method.
