Neat nitrobenzene was continuously irradiated at two ultrasonic frequencies: 40 and 200 kHz, under air and argon atmosphere, respectively. Samples taken at intervals of 1, 5, 10 and 24 h were analyzed by GC-MS and decomposition products were identified. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed. Presence of air as dissolved gas leads to oxygenated compounds such as 1,4-benzoquinone, 2,4-dinitrophenol, m-dinitrobenzene while argon inhibits the decomposition of nitrobenzene, especially at sonication times under 5 h. Based on the nature of the compounds identified we advanced a mechanism, involving a divergent splitting of unstable radical cation of NB in air and argon respectively. Thus, under air, the phenyl cation formation is preferred leading to 1,4-benzoquinone nitro-biphenyls and dinitrobenzene, while under argon, the phenyl radical formation seems to be favored, leading to phenol and diphenyl ether. The oxygenated compounds detected under argon clearly are a consequence of the nitro group splitting.

Diphenyl ethers (DPE) and its analogs have exhibited excellent potential for therapeutic and industrial applications. Since the 19th century, intensive research is perpetuating on the synthetic routes and biological properties of DPEs. Few well-known DPEs are Nimesulide, Fenclofenac, Triclosan, Sorafenib, MK-4965, and MK-1439 which have shown the potential of this moiety as a lead scaffold for different pharmacological properties. In this review, we recapitulate the diverse synthetic route of DPE moiety inclusive of merits and demerits over the classical synthetic route and how this moiety sparked an interest in researchers to discern the SAR (Structure Activity Relationship) for the development of diversified biological properties of DPEs such as antimicrobial, antifungal, antiinflammatory & antiviral activities.

Decabrominated diphenyl ether (BDE-209) is widely used as a flame retardant and is detected at high levels in the environment. Its toxicities have been reported and have attracted attention. In the present study, broilers were used to determine the response in growth performance, carcass traits, meat quality, blood profiles and antioxidant system to BDE-209 exposure at doses of 0, 0.02, 0.4 and 4 mg/kg. The results showed that BDE-209 exposure at levels of 0.02 or 0.4 mg/kg increased feed intake and decreased feed efficiency. BDE-209 altered the blood profiles, such as reducing the numbers of white blood cells, lymphocytes and neutrophilic granulocytes. As compared with the control, BDE-209 exposure significantly increased abdominal fat percentages of broilers at 64.9–159.5% and adversely affected the selected biochemical indicators, including alkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), creatine (CRE), which indicated its toxicity to liver and kidney functions. Moreover, BDE-209 exposure significantly increased plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) concentrations and decreased the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), which implied aggravating oxidant stress and decline of antioxidant capacity in broilers. In conclusion, our data demonstrated that the environmental pollutant BDE-209 adversely influenced growth performance, increased the deposition of abdominal fat, impaired antioxidant capacity and the immune system and had potential toxicity to the liver and kidney of broilers.

The present study provides new data concerning the chemical characterisation of Physcia mediterranea Nimis, a rare Mediterranean species belonging to the family Physciaceae. The phytochemical screening was carried out using GC-MS, HPLC-ESI-MS-MS, and NMR techniques. Hot extraction of n-hexane was carried out, followed by separation of the part insoluble in methanol: wax (WA-hex), from the part soluble in methanol (ME-hex). GC-MS analysis of the ME-hex part revealed the presence of methylbenzoic acids such as sparassol and atraric acid and a diterpene with a kaurene skeleton which has never been detected before in lichen species. Out of all the compounds identified by HPLC-ESI-MS-MS, sixteen compounds are common between WA-hex and ME-hex. Most are aliphatic fatty acids, phenolic compounds and depsides. The wax part is characterised by the presence of atranorin, a depside of high biological value. Proton 1H and carbon 13C NMR have confirmed its identification. Atranol, chloroatranol (depsides compound), Ffukinanolide (sesquiterpene lactones), leprolomin (diphenyl ether), muronic acid (triterpenes), and ursolic acid (triterpenes) have also been identified in ME-hex. The results suggested that Physcia mediterranea Nimis is a valuable source of bioactive compounds that could be useful for several applications as functional foods, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.

The effect of the bleaching and non-bleaching phenylpyridazinones, norflurazon [4-chloro-5-(methylamino)-2-(α,α,α-trifluoro-m-tolyl)-3(2H)-pyridazinone] and BAS 29095 [4,5-dimethoxy-2-phenyl-3(2H)-pyridazinone], on chlorophyll fluorescence of the green alga,Scenedesmus acutus, was investigated and compared to other bleaching herbicides, difunon3[EMD-IT 5914, 5(dimethylamino-methylene)-2-oxo-4-phenyl-2,5-dihydrofuranecarbonitrile-(3)] and the diphenyl ether, oxyfluorfen [2-chloro-1-(3-ethoxy-4-nitrophenoxy)-4-(trifluoromethyl)benzene]. Following chlorophyll fluorescence during short-term cultivation in the presence of herbicides and comparing it to physiological parameters such as chlorophyll content and packed cell volume allowed for rapid screening to detect different primary herbicidal modes of action. Two primary bleaching effects caused by either inhibition of carotene biosynthesis (certain substituted pyridazinones and difunon) or peroxidative degradation of membrane lipids (certain diphenyl ethers) led to completely different fluorescence signals. Growth of algae in the presence of a carotene biosynthesis inhibitor resulted in a rapid rise to maximum fluorescence, followed by a single decay phase, whereas bleaching diphenyl ethers led to a rapid loss of total fluorescence. Non-bleaching phenylpyridazinones, which act as weak electron transport inhibitors, inhibited variable fluorescence. Detoxication during algal growth became evident by recovery of the fluorescence induction.
