AbstractAs a common endocrinopathy of reproductive-aged women, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is characterized by hyperandrogenism, oligo-anovulation and polycystic ovarian morphology. It is linked with insulin resistance through preferential abdominal fat accumulation that is worsened by obesity. Over the past two millennia, menstrual irregularity, male-type habitus and sub-infertility have been described in women and confirm that these clinical features of PCOS were common in antiquity. Recent findings in normal-weight hyperandrogenic PCOS women show that exaggerated lipid accumulation by subcutaneous (SC) abdominal stem cells during development to adipocytes in vitro occurs in combination with reduced insulin sensitivity and preferential accumulation of highly-lipolytic intra-abdominal fat in vivo. This PCOS phenotype may be an evolutionary metabolic adaptation to balance energy storage with glucose availability and fatty acid oxidation for optimal energy use during reproduction. This review integrates fundamental endocrine-metabolic changes in healthy, normal-weight PCOS women with similar PCOS-like traits present in animal models in which tissue differentiation is completed during fetal life as in humans to support the evolutionary concept that PCOS has common ancestral and developmental origins.

Background: In 1952, Professor Bryan Brooke described his technique for everting an ileostomy in order to minimise skin excoriation1. Pouting, mucosa-everting Brooke’s ileostomy have been accepted as the best technique for stoma formation in almost all cases, save a few difficult situations – such as edematous friable bowel with bulky short mesentry! In such cases formation of standard Brooke’s ‘Pouting’ ileostomy is not only difficult, but an impossible and a dangerous surgical exercise! In these situations where the bowel is “Un-Brookeable” due to aforementioned causes. Over a period of 12 years we could device a formula – “Ray’s Criteria” to decide at operation, if a given ileum in a particular patient, is safely “Brookeable” (i.e. evertable into a neat Brooke, spouting ileostomy) or is   “Un-Brookeable”.Methods: 23 patients were included in this study over 12 years, who due to the peculiarity of their body morphology (obesity or thick abdominal fat), edematous friable bowel with bulky mesentry, the ileum could not be drawn outside the abdomen and everted as Brooke’s ileostomy. The “Brookeability” of the exteriorized ileum was decided based on satisfying two issues of Ray’s criteria.Results: By using “Ray’s criteria”, we could seggregate patients safely as “Brookeable” and “Un-Brookeable”. Those deemed “Un-Brookable” underwent “Long segment Hanging snout” end ileostomy, which is the theme of our study.Conclusions: We are emphatic in stating that by using “Ray’s criteria” we could accurately segregate cases into “Brookeable” and “Un-Brookeable” ileum.

This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of active yeast (AY) and inactive-stabilized yeast (Thepax) supplementation to the rations in different levels on broiler performance. In the experiment carried out according to the randomized plot design, there were 5 different treatment groups as control group (Group 1), 0.1% Thepax (Group 2), 0.2% Thepax (Group 3), 0.1% AY (Group 4) and 0.2% AY (Group 5). In the experiment, the effects of active and inactive yeasts on body weight gain (BWG), feed consumption, feed conversion rate, carcass weight (CW), carcass yield (CY), abdominal fat amount and mortality were investigated. In the present experiment, the final live weight, the cumulative feed consumption and feed conversion were insignificant. The statistical difference between the groups in the experiment was significant in carcass weight, but insignificant in the amount of abdominal fat and mortality rate. Inactive-stabilized yeast (Thepax 0.1%) was more effective than 0.2% AY on BWG. Only 0.1% Thepax increased the CW besides CY was high in 0.1%, 0.2% Thepax and 0.1% AY groups. It has been observed that active and inactive yeasts are used in broiler chickens without any problem.

Background: The aim is to compare the effectiveness of 3% of natural preparations mixtures based on kaolin associated with garlic, ginger and/or their mixture on the performance, the cutting yield, carcass and bone qualities of broiler. Methods: 192 one-day-old Cobb 500 chicks were assigned to 04 groups of 48 four-replicate chicks (C: without addition; Kgar: 3% kaolin-garlic; Kgin: 3% kaolin-ginger and Kgg: 3% kaolin-garlic-ginger). Result: Results showed that the mixtures significantly improve body weight and feed efficiency at 42 days, with nonetheless a more marked effect for the Kgar group (BW: +4.5%; FCR: -5.5%). In addition, still in favor of the Kgar group, the same tendency was recorded for the yield of chicken ready-to-cook (+3.2%; P=0.02) accompanied by enhanced breast and thighs yields. In terms of quality, the mixtures significantly impacted the meat conservation criteria by reducing water-holding capacity by almost 50% and less abdominal fat deposition. Finally, although not significant, the indicators of bone quality measured (ash content and seedor index) appear better in chickens receiving mixtures. The results of this study show the interest of adding a mixture of kaolin and condiments in improving broiler performance, meat quality and bone characteristics.

Chickens are one of the most important sources of meat worldwide, and the growth status of abdominal fat is closely related to production efficiency. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play an important role in lipid metabolism and deposition regulation. However, research on the expression profile of lncRNAs related to the development of abdominal fat in chickens after hatching and their interaction regulatory networks is still lacking. To characterize the lncRNA expression profile during the development of chicken abdominal fat, abdominal adipose tissues from 6-, 14-, 22-, and 30-week-old Chinese Gushi chickens were herein used to construct 12 cDNA libraries, and a total of 3,827 new lncRNAs and 5,466 previously annotated lncRNAs were revealed. At the same time, based on the comparative analysis of five combinations, 276 differentially expressed lncRNAs (DE-lncRNAs) were screened. Functional enrichment analysis showed that the predicted target genes of these DE-lncRNAs were significantly enriched in pathways related to the posttranscriptional regulation of gene expression, negative regulation of cell proliferation, cell adhesion and other biological processes, glycosphingolipid biosynthesis, PPAR signaling, fatty acid degradation, fatty acid synthesis and others. In addition, association analysis of the lncRNA transcriptome profile was performed, and DE-lncRNA-related lncRNA-mRNA, lncRNA-miRNA and lncRNA-miRNA-mRNA interaction regulatory networks were constructed. The results showed that DE-lncRNA formed a complex network with PPAR pathway components, including PPARD, ACOX1, ADIPOQ, CPT1A, FABP5, ASBG2, LPL, PLIN2 and related miRNAs, including mir-200b-3p, mir-130b-3p, mir-215-5p, mir-122-5p, mir-223 and mir-125b-5p, and played an important regulatory role in biological processes such as lipid metabolism, adipocyte proliferation and differentiation. This study described the dynamic expression profile of lncRNAs in the abdominal fat of Gushi chickens for the first time and constructed the DE-lncRNA interaction regulatory network. The results expand the number of known lncRNAs in chicken abdominal fat and provide valuable resources for further elucidating the posttranscriptional regulatory mechanism of chicken abdominal fat development or deposition.
