The vinyl ester resin sizing agents modified with epoxidized polybutadiene or epoxy terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile oligomer were prepared. The influence of the sizing agents on the performances of carbon fiber and its composite was studied. Surface topography of carbon fiber was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). Fluffs and breakage, stiffness test were used to analyze the workability in later process of carbon fiber. The results indicated that the sizing agents had important influence to the carbon fiber and its composite. SEM images demonstrated that the sized carbon fiber had smooth surface. The sizing agent could significantly improve not only handling characteristics of carbon fiber due to the increase of fiber flexibility and reduction of fluffs and breakage, but also the interfacial adhesion of carbon fiber/vinyl ester resin composite.

The electrochemical corrosion behavior of carbon fiber/vinyl ester resin composite (CF/VE), which has been used for sucker rods in the oil field, was studied under an immersion condition of 3% NaCl aqueous solution at 65°C. Galvanic corrosion experiment between the CF/VE composite and the alloy used as joints linking the composite sucker rods and metal suckers was performed. The results show that in a polarization system, there are a cathode reaction of oxygen absorption on the surface of the composite and an anode reaction, which is mainly depended on the concentration of the hydroxyl (OH¯). A slight acceleration of the absorption behavior and the decrease in the mechanical properties of the CF/VE composite are caused by the galvanic corrosion.

The roughness and stripe of the carbon fiber surface is increased, what is in favour of the combination of fiber and resin, and also increases the active ingredient of fiber surface, by using the low temperature plasma on carbon fiber surface treatment. In this paper, we research the influence of CF/PES-C material ILSS with low temperature plasma treatment. Experimental results show that the low temperature plasma treatment improves the interfacial adhesion performance of CF/PES-C composite material, so that it mends the interfacial property of the composites.
