ABSTRACTThe synthesis, structure and magnetic properties of monoclinic Nb12O29 are described. The synthesis of a pure bulk sample is difficult due to the large number of other similar phases. It is achieved by rapid reduction of H-Nb2O5 with Nb metal. The compound is shown to undergo a charge ordering transition at low temperature which provokes long range magnetic order in an intriguing one dimensional arrangement.

We investigated the structural and magnetic properties of 20 nm-sized nanoparticles of the half-doped manganite Ho0.5Ca0.5MnO3 prepared by sol-gel approach. Neutron powder diffraction patterns show Pbnm orthorhombic symmetry for 10 K < T < 290 K, with lattice parameters a, b, and c in the relationship c/√2 < a < b, indicating a cooperative Jahn–Teller effect, i.e., orbital ordering OO, from below room temperature. In contrast with the bulk samples, in the interval 250 < T < 300 K, the fingerprint of charge ordering (CO) does not manifest itself in the temperature dependence of lattice parameters. However, there are signs of CO in the temperature dependence of magnetization. Accordingly, below 100 K superlattice magnetic Bragg reflections arise, which are consistent with an antiferromagnetic phase strictly related to the bulk Mn ordering of a charge exchange-type (CE-type), but characterized by an increased fraction of ferromagnetic couplings between manganese species themselves. Our results show that in this narrow band half-doped manganite, size reduction only modifies the balance between the Anderson superexchange and Zener double exchange interactions, without destabilizing an overall very robust antiferromagnetic state.

Structural and magnetic properties of Bi0.5 Ca0.5-xBaxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.10) samples with charge ordering (CO) state and C-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) magnetic structure have been studied systematically. With increasing Ba-doping level, both CO and AFM are weakened. From the micro-magnetic analysis, we clarify the ambiguity about the Néel temperature TN in bismuth-based perovskite manganites. We find that the paramagnetic (PM)-CO/AFM transition temperature TCO at high temperature is the onset temperature of the PM–AFM transition, while customarily so-called TN at low temperature indicates the finish of the PM–AFM transition. Both the macro- and micro-magnetic data show that, in all the samples, only AFM state coexists with PM matrix below CO transition and above TN, while AFM state coexists with ferromagnetic (FM) state and PM state at lower temperature below TN.

A perovskite manganese oxide of Bi0.2Ca0.8MnO3 exhibits charge ordering of Mn3+ and Mn4+ ions upon cooling. This is an interesting phenomenon from both academic and practical viewpoints, since the charge ordering is accompanied by significant changes in both electric and magnetic properties of the oxide. Since a difference of scattering amplitudes between Mn3+ and Mn4+ is quite small, charge ordering can be observable as superlattice reflections due to the lattice strain caused by this ordering with an electron diffraction method. However, the background in an electron diffraction pattern, which is mainly caused by plasmon scattering, has hindered a precise investigation of the weak diffuse scattering. The purpose of the present work is to assess an efficiency of an omega-type energy-filter in detailed observations of the weak superlattice reflections associated with the charge ordering.Specimens of Bi0.2Ca0.8MnO3 were prepared by a conventional ion-milling technique. The critical temperature of charge ordering (TCo) was determined to be 160K by resistivity and magnetization measurements.
