Abstract This paper proposes a distributed RS coding scheme which is comprised of two different ReedSolomon (RS) codes over fast Rayleigh fading channel. Practically in any distributed coding scheme, an appropriate encoding strategy at the relay plays a vital role in achieving an optimized code at the destination. Therefore, the authors have proposed an efficient approach for proper selection of information at the relay based on subspace approach. Using this approach as the proper benchmark, another more practical selection approach with low complexity is also proposed. Monte Carlo simulations demonstrate that the distributed RS coding scheme under the two approaches can achieve nearly the same bit error rate (BER) performance. Furthermore, to jointly decode the source and relay codes at the destination, two different decoding algorithms named as naive and smart algorithms are proposed. The simulation results reveal that the advantage of smart algorithm as compared to naive one. The proposed distributed RS coding scheme with smart algorithm outperforms its non-cooperative scheme by a gain of 2.4-3.2 dB under identical conditions. Moreover, the proposed distributed RS coding scheme outperforms multiple existing distributed coding schemes, making it an excellent candidate for the future distributed coding wireless communications.

In 1917 the British government began making plans for post-war adjustments to the economy, which included the migration of surplus women to the dominions. The Society for the Overseas Settlement of British Women was established in 1920 to facilitate the migration of female workers to the dominions. Earlier studies have argued that overseas emigration efforts purposefully directed women into domestic service as surplus commodities, thus alleviating the female ‘surplus’ and easing economic hardships of the post-war period. This article argues that as Publicity Officer for the SOSBW, Meriel Talbot targeted women she believed would be ideal candidates for emigration, including former members of the Women's Land Army and affiliated groups. With the proper selection of female migrants, Talbot sought to expand work opportunities for women in the dominions beyond domestic service, while reducing the female surplus at home and servicing the connection between state and empire. Dominion authorities, whose demands for migrant labour vacillated between agricultural workers during the war years and domestic servants after 1920, disapproved of Talbot's efforts to migrate women for work in agriculture. Divergent policies led to the early failure of the SOSBW in 1923.

Beach nourishment has been widely used for beach protection around the world. However, there is limited information about beach nourishment in China. This study offers an overview of beach nourishment practices, status and technological advances in China, based on the literature, reports, and personal communications. The results demonstrate that beach nourishment has been recognized as an effective and environmentally friendly measure to combat coastal erosion and has been increasingly adopted in China, especially in the past decade. The unique characteristics of coastal China resulted in a difference in beach nourishment between China and Western developed countries in terms of the types, objectives, and shapes of beach nourishment. For the types of nourishments in China, there were approximately the same number of restored beaches and newly constructed beaches. For fill sediment, homogeneous fill and heterogeneous fill comprised 51.1% and 48.9% of projects, respectively. The objective of beach nourishment was mainly to promote coastal tourism, and the shape of nourished beaches was dominated by headland bays. This study also indicated that China has achieved a number of technological advances in beach nourishment, including methods of beach nourishment on severely eroded coasts and muddy coasts, an optimized design of drain pipes involved in urban beaches, and ecological design considerations. From the past decade of practices, four aspects were proposed as considerations for future nourishment: sand sources, technique advances, ecological effects, and management of beach nourishments.

This study combines specific high-rise shear wall residential projects with the Revit to demonstrate BIM application processes. The use of R-Star CAD may help to realize the link barrier of the building information model and the structural analysis software PKPM. Sequentially, the information supplement of the structural analysis model is completed by extracting the structural information with the Revit secondary development. By the collaborative design platform based on BIM technology, the paper examines the collision check of structural model, conducts collision analysis on other professional models and modifies the design scheme for conflict points. After the statistics of material usage, an optimized design is proposed. The findings of this paper could contribute to provide some reference for the specific application of BIM in structural design and realize the application of BIM technology in the process of building structure design.
