Abstract The analysis of metal concentrations in feathers and the micronuclei (MN) and other nuclear abnormalities (NA) test in birds are tools used for evaluating the impacts that anthropogenic actions have been causing to the environment and organisms. Here we used these biomarkers to investigate the response of birds to disturbances observed in three areas with different environmental characteristics (natural, agricultural and urban) in southern Brazil. We obtained a diverse sample (108 individuals from 25 species and 17 families) without significant differences in metal concentrations, frequency of MN and AN between sampling points. The concentrations of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) were significantly different between trophic guilds (Zn: p = 0.0006, Cu: p = 0.04) and age classes (Zn: p = 0.01, Cu: p = 0.03). Omnivore birds contributed to the increase in the number of MN (∆AICc: 0.00; w = 0.40) and NA, which was also influenced by age classes and body condition index (BCI) (∆AICc: 0.00; w = 0.34; ∆AICc: 0.89; w = 0.22; ∆AICc: 1.15; w = 0.19; ∆AICc: 1.33; w = 0.18). We showed that in a diverse sample of birds, the variables analyzed affected each biomarker in distinct ways.

This study aims to investigate the potential use of maize stalk (MS), bamboo (BB) and cow manure (CM) derived biochar as a soil amendment on the cadmium (Cd) and trace metals (Mn, Zn, Fe) accumulation by two Cd accumulator cultivars; low (Aijiaoheiye 333) (AJ) and high (Zhouyeheiyoudonger) (ZH) of Brassica chinensis L. The effect of different biochar (4% w/w) on both cultivars grown on artificially Cd contaminated Alfisol soil was studied. All selected biochar decreased the bioavailability of Cd in soil and its phytoavailability for both cultivars of B. chinensis L. followed the order: MS > CM > BB. In particular, with increase soil pH MS biochar significantly reduced Cd bioavailability in soil by 54% and accumulation in shoots of AJ and ZH cultivars by 35% and 41%, as soil amendment. These results indicated the effectiveness of biochar by reducing the availability and phytotoxicity of Cd, while enhanced shoot dry biomass by promoting microbial activity and availability of essential trace metals.

INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS ON PLANT SPECIES IN SEASONAL FOREST FOR POTENTIAL USE IN RESTORATION ABSTRACT:This study goal was to identify correlations of shrub and tree species with environmental variables, in a Deciduous Seasonal Forest in southern Brazil. Individuals in the arboreal stratum (DBH ≥ 5 cm) and natural regeneration (Class II: 1 ≤ DBH < 5 cm; Class II: DBH < 1 cm and height ≥ 20 cm) were sampled. Spearman's coefficient was used to determine the correlations. Some species were related to different environmental variables as the stage of development. For example, Actinostemon concolor and Sorocea bonplandii were tolerant to shallow soils, with higher levels of stoniness, a recurrent situation in the forests of the Southern Plateau edge, while Cupania vernalis and Nectandra megapotamica were correlated negatively to these variables. The zoochoric species are important for the formation of the arboreal component and the establishment of populations. The different relationships observed show that the use of shrub and tree species in ecological restoration should be based on the analysis of potentially favorable or limiting environmental variables to the establishment of these species. Keywords: indigenous species, limiting factors, degraded areas, environmental recovery. DOI:
