Abstract Biochar has been used to alleviate the contamination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil and to inhibit ARGs transfer from soil to plants. However, the effect of aged biochar on ARGs abundance in soil and ARGs enrichment in plants are scarcely investigated. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted to compare the effects of fresh and aged biochars on the accumulation of five typical ARGs including tetX, tetW, sul2, ermB and intI1 in a chicken manure-fertilized soil and in pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.). Results showed that both biochars significantly decreased the abundance of tetW, sul2, and ermB and increased the abundance of tetX and intI1 in soil. However, the accumulation of all tested ARGs in pakchoi were significantly decreased by both biochars. At the lower addition rate (1%), the fresh biochar was superior to the aged biochar in decreasing the accumulation of some genes (tetW, tetX, and sul2) in pakchoi, whereas an opposite tendency was observed for other genes (ermB and intI1). As the addition rate increased to 2%, the difference between the two biochars diminished and a similar capacity of decreasing ARGs transfer was observed. The reduction in ARGs accumulation in pakchoi was highly related to the type of ARGs, the biochar addition level and the aging of biochar. Our results provide insights into the naturally aged biochar on the fate of ARGs in a soil-plant system.

Consumers perceive organic vegetables as better in taste and quality compared to conventional vegetables. Therefore, this study aims to determine the sensory difference of choy sum (Brassica chinensis L. var. parachinensis) grown with organic fertiliser and mineral fertiliser without the input of synthetic pesticides. A survey was carried out to determine Malaysian consumer sensory perception on organic and conventional leafy vegetables. The choy sum was planted in a Complete Randomised Block Design (CRBD), with input of organic fertiliser (T1, rate: 1500kg/4046m2) and mineral fertiliser (T2, rate: 63kg/4046m2) in a 7-day interval. It was harvested for sensory evaluation at maturity. Seventy-five untrained panellists were selected for the sensory test. The moisture content was analysed using oven drying method, while the sugar and colour analysis was carried out using a brix refractometer and a spectrophotometer, respectively. The survey confirmed that most consumers believe that the sensory attributes of organic vegetables are better than conventional vegetables. However, sensory evaluation shows that there is no significant difference (P > 0.05) in all sensory attributes tested except for greenness. T2 were significantly greener (P < 0.05) than T1. There were also no significant differences (P > 0.05) found between the treatments in the sugar, moisture and colour analysis.

Caisim (Brassica chinensis) is one of the vegetables that has many benefits such as protein, carbohydrates, fat and plays an important role in meeting food needs, and is good for health. Caisim is well adapted to high temperatures and the price is relatively stable and easy to cultivate. The purpose of this study was to determine the presence of Soil-Transmitted Helminths eggs in caisim (B. chinensis). The research was conducted in a descriptive observational. The research was conducted in July-August 2020 at Parasitology and Microbiology Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Identification of Soil-Transmitted Helminths eggs from 20 caisim as the samples used NaCl flotation method and were analyzed by using a univariate test with tabulated frequency distribution. The results showed that no Soil-Transmitted Helminths eggs were found in caisim (B. chinensis).

Sawi Pakcoy (Brassica chinensis L) is one of the horticultural plants of the Brassicaceae family which is still in the same genus as mustard greens and mustard greens, Sawi pakcoy is a plant that is quite popular and widely consumed by the public because it is very good for health and has high nutritional content. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of giving chicken manure on the growth and yield of pakcoy (Brassica chinensis L.) plants. The method used in this study was a randomized block design (RBD) with four replications and six treatments, namely, P0: 0 tons / ha or without fertilizer, P1: 20 tons / ha, P2: 30 tons / ha, P3: 40 tons / ha, P4: 50 ton / ha, P5: 60 ton / ha. Based on the results of the analysis of variance using a randomized block design (RBD), it was found that the application of chicken manure had no significant effect on plant height, number of leaves, and had a very significant effect on fresh weight of Tan-1, and fresh weight of ha-1. The optimum dose of chicken manure 60 tons / ha is the best treatment for optimal growth and yield of pakcoy (Brassica chinensis L.) plants with an average production of fresh weight ha-1 reaching 52.47 tons ha-1.
