ABSTRACT Exploration for porphyry copper deposits beneath barren or poorly mineralized, advanced argillic lithocaps is becoming common­place; however, there have been few discoveries except in cases where the copper ± gold ± molybdenum mineralization has been partly exposed, typically as a result of partial lithocap erosion. At Valeriano, in the high Andes of northern Chile, completely concealed Miocene porphyry copper-gold mineralization was recently discovered beneath a lithocap. Here, the results of the staged drilling program that led to the discovery are summarized, with emphasis on the key geologic, alteration, and mineralization features that provided guidance. The final deep drill holes of the 16-hole program cut well-defined advanced argillic and sericitic alteration zones before entering chalcopyrite ± bornite–bearing, potassic-altered porphyry, with grades of 0.7 to 1.2% Cu equiv, at depths of ~1,000 to >1,800 m.

Porphyry copper-gold deposit commonly exhibits an extensive alteration zone of hydrothermal micas particularly biotite and sericite. This study is aimed to analyze and utilize the chemistry of halogen fluorine and chlorine of biotite and sericite to be a possible tool in vectoring to ore for copper porphyry deposits. To achieve the objectives, several selected altered rock samples were taken crossing the Batu Hijau copper-gold mine from inner to outer of the deposit, and hydrothermal micas contained by the rocks were analyzed petrographically and chemically. Mineral chemistry was detected by electron microprobe analyzer, whilst biotite is petrographically classified as either magmatic or hydrothermal types. Sericite replacing plagioclase occurred as fine-grained mineral and predominantly associated with argillic-related alteration types. Biotites in the Batu Hijau deposit are classified as phlogopite with a relatively low mole fraction magnesium (XMg) (~0.75) compared to the “typical” copper porphyry deposit (~0.82). The relationship between the XMg and halogen contents are generally consistent with “Fe-F and Mg-Cl avoidance rules”.  F content in biotite and sericite decrease systematically from inner part of the deposit which is represented by early biotite (potassic) zone where the main copper-gold hosted, to the outer part of the deposit. However, chlorine in both biotite and sericite from each of the alteration zones shows a relative similar concentration, which suggests that it is not suitable to be used in identification of the alteration zones associated with strong copper-gold mineralization. H2O content of the biotite and sericite also exhibits a systematic increase outward which may also provide a possible geochemical vector to ore for the copper porphyry deposits. This is well correlated with fluorine content of biotite in rocks and bulk concentration of copper from the corresponding rocks.

The regional tectonic conditions of the KSK Contract of Work are located in the mid-Tertiary magmatic arc (Carlile and Mitchell, 1994) which host a number of epithermal gold deposits (eg, Kelian, Indon, Muro) and significant prospects such as Muyup, Masupa Ria, Gunung Mas and Mirah. Copper-gold mineralization in the KSK Contract of Work is associated with a number of intrusions that have occupied the shallow-scale crust at the Mesozoic metamorphic intercellular junction to the south and continuously into the Lower Tertiary sediment toward the water. This intrusion is interpreted to be part of the Oligocene arc of Central Kalimantan (in Carlile and Mitchell 1994) Volcanic rocks and associated volcanoes are older than intrusions, possibly aged Cretaceous and exposed together with all three contacts (Carlile and Mitchell, 1994) some researchers contribute details about the geological and mineralogical background, and some papers for that are published for the Beruang Kanan region and beyond but no one can confirm the genesis type of the Beruang Kanan region The mineralization of the Beruang Kanan area is generally composed by high yields of epithermal sulphide mineralization. with Cu-Au mineralization This high epithermal sulphide deposition coats the upper part of the Cu-Au porphyry precipitate associated with mineralization processes that are generally controlled by the structure

The article presents new data on geology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of porphyry-copper, gold-silver, and silver-polymetallic ore occurrences in the Kongin magmatic zone of the Omolon terrane and granitoids, associated with it. It has been demonstrated that petrology and the age of granitoids are similar to those in the OCVB Penzhina segment. Mineralization of the Kongin zone is very close to that of the OCVB, differing in relatively high Mo in porphyry-copper ores and prevalence of silver-polymetallic mineralization over gold-silver.
