There are many studies conducted about Barbie dolls. However, it has not been investigated how these toys reflected on gender perceptions of children. That is this topic is still an issue of concern. On the other hand, games give crucial clues regarding making sense of children’s worlds. Through this study, it was aimed to analyze the reflections of Barbie culture on children’s dramatic game processes. The design of the study was case study one of qualitative research designs aiming to obtain information in depth. The participants consisted of seven children in 5-year class of a nursery school and prefer to play in dramatic game center during game time. The data of the study was collected by observations. Within data collection, the whole process was recorded as videos in order to minimize data loss. In total, video record of 280 minutes was obtained. The data was analyzed by content analysis method. It was found out that children frequently emphasized physical features playing with Barbies, besides they involved in gendered conversations. Moreover, it was revealed that Barbie culture increased the gendered utterances of children when handled in terms of gender. Our study is parallel to the results of limited number of studies regarding this matter.Extended English abstract is in the end of PDF (TURKISH) file.ÖzetBarbie bebeklere ilişkin olarak yapılmış bir çok araştırma bulunmaktadır. Ancak bu oyuncakların çocukların toplumsal cinsiyet algılarına nasıl yansıdıkları yeterince araştırılmamıştır. Yani bu konu halen merak konusudur. Oyunlar ise çocukların dünyalarının anlaşılmasında önemli ipuçları sunarlar. Bu çalışmada Barbie kültürünün çocukların dramatik oyun süreçlerine yansımalarının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın yöntemini derinlemesine bilgi edinilmesini amaçlayan nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden durum çalışması oluşturmaktadır.  Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu bir anaokulundaki 5 yaş sınıfına devam eden ve oyun zamanında dramatik oyun merkezinde oynamayı tercih eden yedi çocuk oluşturmuştur. Çalışmada veriler gözlemler yoluyla elde edilmiştir. Veri toplama sürecinde, veri kaybını en aza indirmek için sürecin tamamı kamera kaydına alınmıştır. Toplamda yaklaşık 280 dakikalık kamera kaydı elde edilmiştir. Veriler içerik analizi yöntemiyle analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmada çocukların Barbie’lerle oynadıkları sırada sıkça fiziksel özelliklere vurgu yaptıkları, ayrıca cinsiyetçi söylemlerde bulundukları belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca «toplumsal cinsiyet» bakımından ele alındığında Barbie kültürünün çocukların cinsiyetçi söylemlerini beslediği sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmamız konuya ilişkin olarak yapılmış sınırlı sayıdaki çalışmanın sonuçlarıyla örtüşmektedir.

Abstract Objective Soroxchi/Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that can result in cerebral and pulmonary hypoxia. Neuropsychological research on AMS is minimal and the long-term effects on cognition and behavior are unclear. AMS is associated with cognitive impairments in processing speed, attention, and executive functions as well as neurobehavioral symptoms. This case study delineates the neuropsychological and neurobehavioral changes secondary to bilateral globus pallidus (GP) lesions associated with AMS. Case Description Patient is a 51-year old, primarily Spanish-speaking, male of Mexican descent with 9 years of education, and who had traveled to La Paz, Bolivia (4,070 MASL) for work. Upon arrival, fatigue and dizziness led to hospitalization to treat acute pulmonary edema and hypoxia. Brain MRI revealed hyperintense bilateral GP lesions. Medical history was notable for hyperlipidemia. Psychiatric history was unremarkable. Neuropsychological assessment 4 months post-AMS revealed impairments in visuo-conceptual and speeded complex visuospatial abilities, executive functions, and confrontation naming. Cognitive improvements were noted in delayed recall of non-contextual verbal information and confrontation naming ten months post-AMS. Significant mood and personality changes were reported; patient endorsed anhedonia, fatigue, alexithymia, avolition, and sleep difficulties. Family described patient as depressed, apathetic, and socially withdrawn. Pharmacological and psychotherapy treatments were recommended and initiated. Diagnostic Impressions and Outcomes Findings were consistent with a diagnosis of Mild Neurocognitive Disorder. His family denied neurobehavioral improvements post interventions. Discussion This case study is the first to characterize the long-term neuropsychological and neurobehavioral changes following bilateral GP lesions secondary to AMS. Declines in visual-conceptual abilities reveal a new finding for this type of cerebral incident.

Abstract<title> Abstract </title>This article offers a critical account of the turn in the religious social development debate in South Africa from its initial critical people-centred disposition to a preoccupation with pragmatic considerations, that is, its elaborated claim on the need for a formal religion-state partnership in the field of social development on the basis of the extensiveness and effectiveness of existing welfare and social development networks run by the religious sector. After presenting a brief overview of the initial social development debate, the article unpacks and discusses the essential shift in the debate and the respective support that it has found in the idea of social capital and a selective reading of an American case study to sustain its pragmatic argument. Finally, the article looks beyond the current limitations in the debate and concludes with an argument for renewed critical engagement by the religious sector in South Africa by which it would (1) advance a moral debate about social structure and direction, and (2) become a rigorous exponent itself of the social development paradigm on the level of actual implementation and empowerment 'from below.'
