With the implementation of new round electricity system reform in China, the provincial electricity grid enterprises (EGEs) of China should focus on improving their operational efficiency to adapt to the increasingly fierce market competition and satisfy the requirements of the electricity industry reform. Therefore, it is essential to conduct operational efficiency evaluation on provincial EGEs. While considering the influences of exterior environmental variables on the operational efficiency of provincial EGEs, a three-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) methodology is first utilized to accurately assess the real operational efficiency of provincial EGEs excluding the exterior environmental values and statistical noise. The three-stage DEA model takes the amount of employees, the fixed assets investment, the 110 kV and below distribution line length, and the 110 kV and below transformer capacity as input variables and the electricity sales amount, the amount of consumers, and the line loss rate as output variables. The regression results of the stochastic frontier analysis model indicate that the operational efficiencies of provincial EGEs are significantly affected by exterior environmental variables. Results of the three-stage DEA model imply that the exterior environmental values and statistical noise result in the overestimation of operational efficiency of provincial EGEs, and the exclusion of exterior environmental values and statistical noise has provincial-EGE-specific influences. Furthermore, 26 provincial EGEs are divided into four categories to better understand the differences of operational efficiencies before and after the exclusion of exterior environmental values and statistical noise.

In this study an Output-oriented DEA (Data Envelopment Analysis) model is used to measure operational efficiency of foreign branches of Bangladeshi banks as financial intermediary organization for borrowing funds from savers and lending those funds to others for making profit. Among 58 Bangladeshi banks there are only three Bangladeshi banks which have in total seven foreign branches in different foreign locations. A branch of bank can’t be separated legally from its parent company and supervised by its home authorities as part of supervision of the banking group as a whole. By employing DEA model and using “Financial Intermediary Approach” this study found that as a financial intermediary organization between savers and borrowers these foreign branches of Bangladeshi banks are performing efficiently over the years. Among three banks Janata Bank Limited and AB Bank limited are performing most efficiently and Sonali Bank Limited is performing less efficiently relative to two other banks in operating their foreign branches as a financial intermediary organization for borrowing funds from savers and lending those funds to others for making profit.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the efficiency of the four largest Greek banking organizations for the period 2004–2014, including both a period of strong economic growth and a period of economic crisis and recession, which is still plaguing the Greek economy and more specifically the Greek banking sector. Design/methodology/approach The study incorporates the application of financial ratio analysis and the data envelopment analysis (DEA) in order to calculate the technical efficiency of Greek financial institutions. More specifically, a two-stage output-oriented DEA model is developed in order to estimate the global efficiency of banks. The banking function is considered as consisting of two stages in series, a service/operational efficiency and a profitability efficiency. In both output-oriented models, methods of constant returns to scale and variable returns to scale were applied. Findings The results show that in terms of operational efficiency, banks started from a low rate of return in 2004, which improved until 2008, which marked the peak of operational efficiency. By 2010, the operating efficiency varied with downward trend until 2012–2013. In terms of profitability efficiency, the image is clearer, since the impact the financial crisis had on bank’s profit efficiency led, by 2012, to a plunge in the average efficiency by 30–40 percent. Originality/value A multi-stage DEA process, input oriented, was used in order to estimate changes in the performance and efficiency of banking system. The period 2004–2014 has not been examined until recently and all previous studies used the output-oriented DEA model.

With the professionalization of Chinese football, currently, Chinese football industry has become a new economic topic. The team like Guangzhou Evergrande, as a representative of the ‘money’ football policy in China, is popular. The China Football Association Super League (CSL) can be considered as an emerging field of great investment value. As such, the team’s operational efficiency should be a key factor that affects the managers and investors. Based on the input-oriented Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) model, this study analyzes the operational efficiencies of teams in CSL. The empirical study shows three key findings: First, team using the crazy investment mode is not efficient in 2012, 2013, 2014 seasons. Second, Beijing Guoan’s efficiency declined in the 2015 season due to his few investment. Third, in order to achieve good achievements in the league in the future, increasing investment should be an inevitable choice.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to evaluate performance of Indian telecom service providers through a benchmarking study of their operational efficiency and service delivery effectiveness. The paper also carries out a peer-to-peer comparison and identifies-specific areas of improvement for different service providers to attain sustainable growth and profitability. Design/methodology/approach – A two stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model was used to compare the performances of the service providers. The first stage represents how efficiently a unit is able to use its infrastructure and resources to generate better quality services. The second stage captures how well the company is able to communicate and deliver these services to the customer. Findings – The results of the study support the applicability of the two stage DEA for comparing the performances of the telecom service providers as they are in line with the financial performance indicators and brand ranking. It is observed that those companies which score high on both operational efficiency and service delivery effectiveness have achieved superior profitability. Research limitations/implications – This study has been carried out at a pan-India level and hence does not take into account circle level or local performance which varies significantly for most service providers. Besides, this the analysis was constrained by limited data in the public domain, which necessitated estimations and extrapolations for some variables of few service providers. Practical implications – The study has helped to provide inputs for the Indian telecom companies for potential performance improvements by providing a comparative analysis of their operational efficiency and service delivery effectiveness. It has enabled to derive deeper insights on potential target areas for managerial attention that could be translated into implementable actions. The benchmarking analysis has also helped to understand whether the current performance of the service provider is sustainable, unprofitable or ephemeral. Originality/value – This paper goes beyond the traditional benchmarking studies of Indian telecom service providers introducing a two stage DEA model to understand the operational efficiency as well as the service delivery effectiveness. The study has helped to derive valuable academic and practical insights on the issue of performance measurement of the Indian telecom service providers.
