The effects of roof cutting techniques on the movement law of the overlying strata and deformation features of the surrounding rock in gob-side entry retaining mines were studied using 200 working faces of the Dianping coal mine in Shanxi Province. Using a mechanical analysis, a cantilever beam model formed by roof cutting was used to derive a deformation equation. The physical model test based on the field prototype revealed an asymmetrically distributed displacement curve and reduced collapse displacement when the rock stratum was far from the cutting seam. Outside of the roof cutting height, the collapse of the overlying strata gradually reached a symmetric distribution with increasing height. The deformation of the retained roadway was mainly concentrated on the roof, and the maximum deformation was 14 mm near the roof cutting side. A numerical simulation of the original size of the model test proved that the laws of strata movement and surrounding rock deformation were consistent with the physical test results. Finally, field measurements were performed, which verified the rationality of this study.

As 2# and 3# coal in Baoxin coal mine are close distance coal seams, combined mining is adopted to ensure the production, and reasonable staggered distance needs to be determined between the upper and lower adjacent workfaces. Calculated on the influence of strata movement, there is a empirical formula for the coal’s alternate distance. It is necessary to analyze the factors in the formula

In order to further improve the recovery ratio in strip mining, this paper makes use of the law of insufficiency and sufficiency in strata movement and buildings’ additional stress release features, puts forward twice strip mining technology. The paper introduces the method and feasibility of twice strip mining. By analyzing karst cave collapse mechanism, the paper points out vertical cracks and horizontal layer separations are the direct causes of karst caves collapses and small strength mining each time can reduce karst cave collapse. The new technology has been applied in Pinghu Mine. It has totally extracted recoverable coal reserves under village buildings, effectively controlled strata deformation, and successfully avoided karst cave collapse within Yangkeng village.

Taking the Western District of Chengchao Iron Mine as engineering background, based on the GPS monitoring data of nearly 8 years and the record of the ground surface movement, the law of ground strata subsidence and movement is studied. The studies have shown that the surface movement caused by underground mining has the characteristics of time delay and displacement angle development has the law of jumping. The strata movement caused by mining is divided into the stage of overlying strata collapse and the collapse stage of surrounding rock to goaf. In the first stage, the vertical stress plays a leading role and rock failure is shown as a regular barrel collapse. In the second stage, horizontal tectonic stress plays a leading role and the collapse mechanism of rock strata can be explained by the cantilever beam theory. According to the mechanism of strata movement analysis, strata movement of Chengchao Iron is divided into six regions, which respectively included vertical subsidence area, toppling sliding zone, dumping area, deformation zone, cumulative deformation area and undisturbed zone. The results of this paper can provide a theoretical basis for the surface movement prediction of caving mining in similar metal mine.
