The paper presents the results of long-term continuous measurements of the deflection of the roof layers in the underground copper mine Polkowice-Sieroszowice, Poland belonging to KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. The measurements were performed with the use of the inclinometric method consisting of continuous registration of changes in the angle of inclination of the roof strata. The measurements were carried out using an inclinometer sensor fixed to the end of a rockbolt in the roof. Measurements presented in the article were made in various regions of the underground mine. The monitoring covered: The exploitation front, machinery chamber and the region of the experimental longwall mining of copper ore. The obtained results proved the usefulness of the developed method in the process of the evaluation of the stability of mining excavations. The sensors were highly sensitive and performed the measurements in a simple way; highly accurate and reliable results were obtained.

The deformation and support method of roadways have always been important issues in safemining and production. Vinacomin's statistics show that, by 2021, there will be 64.19 km of roadwaysthat need to be repaired (accounting for 25% of the total new roadways). Thus, the problem of maintainingroadway stability is facing difficulties in underground coal mines in Vietnam. To find out the causes ofroadway failures, a case study at roadways of the Khe Cham I and Khe Cham III coal mines, Vietnam, ispresented in this paper. Based on the results of a detailed field survey, the deformation characteristics ofroadways and the failure mode of support structures were investigated. The results show that the roadwaydeformation is severe and the main support cannot control surrounding rock mass. Also, the destructionof support structure is frequent on reused roadways, affecting production efficiency and work safety. Therefore, to reduce deformation and increase roadway stability, a new support method called “multistageanchor of rock bolt + cable bolt” has been developed and a new longwall mining system with criticalcoal pillar width has been proposed. The new findings of the research can provide references for scientificstudies, and apply them in Vietnam's underground coal mine practices.

Purpose.  The published studies are aimed at determining the mechanism of deformation of the rocks of the contour around the workings in terms of the parameters of the emerging fracturing and their dependence on the indicators of the strength of the rocks and the depth of occurrence in the massif. The tasks of the study include the installation of fracture indicators, the determination of the parameters of the development of the deformation process around the working, including the effect of longwall mining and taking into account the possibility of reuse of the workings. Methodology. To solve the set tasks, the method of field observations was used together with the use of regression dependencies to determine the dependences of the parameters on the influencing factors. In addition, the method of full-scale pull-out tests of anchor support was used, which made it possible to determine the clamping forces of the anchors. Originality. In the course of the research, the dependences of stresses and deformation along the K7 coal seam in the conditions of the mine named after Kuzembaev CD JSC "ArcelorMittal Temirtau" for the massif around the mine with fastening. Rational parameters for the use of roof bolting in preparatory mine workings have been established. This type of fastening provides direct contact between rocks and lining. Analysis of the results of calculating the parameters of the roof bolting showed that to maintain the roof in the development workings, it is necessary to take into account the parameters of the roof bolting. The main parameters include the length of the anchors, the total resistance of the roof bolting and the density of the anchors. Anchor support forms laminated rock beams in the roof rocks, which ensure the stability of the workings. Conclusions and practical significance. The results of studies devoted to the establishment of the influence of mining-geological and mining-technical factors on the formation of zones of inelastic deformation in the host rocks were considered. Significant dependences of the deformation processes of rocks in the massif around the workings were obtained, and the parabolic zone of destruction of rocks was determined. The practical significance of the research consists in determining the actual indicators of the required bearing capacity of the anchorage at two levels in the conditions of the development of the coal seam k7 of the Kuzembaev mine.

Near earth sensing from unmanned aerial vehicles or UAVs has emerged as a potential approach for fine-scale environmental monitoring. These systems provide a cost-effective and repeatable means to acquire remotely sensed images in unprecedented spatial detail and high signal-to-noise ratio. It is becoming increasingly possible to obtain both physiochemical and structural insights of the environment using state-of-art light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors integrated onto UAVs. Monitoring of sensitive environments, such as swamp vegetation in longwall mining areas is important, yet challenging due to their inherent complexities. Current practices for monitoring these remote and difficult environments are primarily ground-based. This is partly due to an absent framework and challenges of using UAV-based sensor systems in monitoring such sensitive environments. This research addresses the related challenges in the development of a LiDAR system including a workflow for mapping and potentially monitoring highly heterogeneous and complex environments. This involves the amalgamation of several design components, which include hardware integration, calibration of sensors, mission planning, and designing of a processing chain to generate usable datasets. It also includes the creation of new methodologies and processing routines to establish a pipeline for efficient data retrieval and generation of usable products. The designed systems and methods were applied on a peat swamp environment to obtain accurate geo-spatialised LiDAR point cloud. Performance of the LiDAR data was tested against ground-based measurements on various aspects including visual assessment for generation LiDAR metrices maps, canopy height model, and fine-scale mapping.

Abstract The study presents the dynamic analysis of the hydraulic cylinders operated in the powered roof support sections as an important part of the longwall underground mining complexes. This type of hydraulic unit is subjected to frequent shock impacts from the significant rock masses released on the top of mined caverns. Hydraulic props are equipped with safety valves with steel helical springs, which intend to reduce peak loads by the relief of internal pressure. These valves respond to shock with a time delay due to the limited velocity of the pressure wave inside the cylinder and an additional pipe of a small section, which restricts fluid flow in outer space. The new approach represented in this paper is based on mathematical modelling of the interaction of the hydraulic and mechanical parts and using additional signals to control safety valves. Detection of shock in advance (0.02-0.05 s) allows reducing pressure peaks by 30% and avoid failures. The challenges are the development of a “smart valve” with optimised control functions by the signals from additional sensors (vibration, deformation, piston position) and providing fast reaction time with a high flow rate under pressures up to 100 MPa.

Determining a reasonable barrier pillar along gob-side entry of spontaneous combustion coal seam is of great significance to the prevention of spontaneous combustion. In this paper, considering the actual situation of 4301 and 4302 working faces of II-class spontaneous combustion coal seam in Changheng Mine, the characteristics of rock mass collapse and mining-induced stress redistribution of barrier pillar and adjacent area were analyzed, the cusp catastrophe model of coal pillar instability and the theoretical model of limit width of coal pillar air leakage spontaneous combustion were established, and a measurement scheme of side abutment pressure in 4301 working face was carried out. The theoretical model of the coal pillar along the gob-side entry shows that its instability is related to density of overlying strata, physical and mechanical parameters of coal body, dip angle of coal seam and weak face, and buried depth and mining width of working face. And the coal pillar in 4302 working face will be unstable if the width a ≤ 6.8   m . Field measured data shows that 2-8 m is the stress-relaxation area of side solid coal. Then, the width of coal pillar was determined as 7 m. The maximum displacement of rib-to-rib and roof-to-floor of 4302 tailentry was 520 mm and 280 mm, respectively. The coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) observation monitoring results showed that the carbon monoxide volume fraction was in the normal range during the entire process of mining, and no other signs of gas were found. The research results can provide a reference for the barrier pillar designing in the mines under similar conditions.

Rock burst is one major threat to mining safety and economy. Rock burst occurring in the longwall mining roadway accounts for 85% of the total amount of burst events. This paper investigates the causality mechanism of rock burst in longwall roadways by establishing a finite elastic beam model in the working face based on the elastic foundation theory. The breakage process of the main roof and related dynamic effects are analysed. The result shows that the movement of the main roof shows free vibration under certain damping resistance. It is also found that the roof dominant vibration frequency increases with the increase in the thickness and elastic modulus of the roof. During roof vibration, the vertical stress applied on the coal mass is unloaded. The destressing of the roof-coal interface causes the coal mass in the roadway rib to slip into the roadway under the horizontal ground stress, resulting in rock burst. The possibility of rock burst increases with increase in the strength and thickness of the roof and horizontal ground stress within the coal mass. This mechanism explains the occurrence of rock burst in the mining roadway; it provides the fundamental theory for the prevention and controlling technologies of longwall roadway rock burst.
