Tunnel excavation tends to be affected by karst cavities in karst areas. Some cavities that are at low risk of causing safety issues without treatment tend to be ignored in the design and construction of tunnels to reduce costs. It is necessary to gain a better understanding of the effect of such a cavity on the seepage around a tunnel, the deformation of the surrounding rock, and the stress of the tunnel lining. In this paper, a two-dimensional rock-tunnel hydromechanical model with a karst cave was established with FLAC3D finite difference software to simulate the tunnel excavation with the consideration of seepage. Numerical simulations were performed to analyze the deformation of the surrounding rock, the seepage field of the surrounding rock, and the stress of the tunnel lining, and the results were compared for scenarios when the karst cave is at different locations relative to the tunnel. These results can provide a reference for the design and construction of tunnel engineering in rock with karst caves.

The thickness of a karst cave roof at the bottom of a socketed pile plays an important role in the vertical bearing capacity of the socketed pile in the karst region. In practice, its thickness is simply recommended to be not less than 3 times the diameter of the socketed pile, regardless of the geological conditions and the size of the cave itself. In this study, we present an approach for calculating the critical thickness-to-diameter ratio of a karst cave roof η (η = h/d, the ratio of karst cave roof thickness to pile diameter) based on the generalized Hoek–Brown criterion by virtue of the limit analysis method, which considers the pile tip load, hardness degree of the intact rock, and rock mass quality. The analysis results show that less load at the bottom of the pile, higher quality of rock mass, and more hard rock all lead to a smaller critical thickness-diameter ratio, whereas the critical thickness-to-diameter ratio is greater. The validity of the proposed method is verified through a physical model test.

AbstractA mixture of coal bottom ash and slag, with a fraction of fly ash (CAFAS) from steam locomotives, was placed in the cave Divaška jama to delimit and level tourist trails. Emplacement began in 1914 and carried on for several decades. The CAFAS mixed with other cave material gradually changed its structure and appearance. Currently the concentration of some elements in the CAFAS (As, Cu, Hg, Ni, Pb, Zn), and also to a lesser extent in cave sediments (Cr, Cu, Ni), indicates a possibly harmful effect on sediment-associated biota based on ecotoxicological assays. Compared to the cave sediment, the CAFAS contains distinctly different mineral phases and presents a different source of radioactivity. Microbial metabolic activity of CAFAS is low, 0.22 μl O2/gDW h, but higher than that of cave sediment. The present environmental hazards from CAFAS are estimated to be low. Whereas the emplacement of CAFAS was seen initially a long-term solution for waste disposal and management of the cave, it turned out that CAFAS enriches the underground environment with inorganic and organic compounds and disperses pollution into the cave ecosystem. After its removal from the cave, the CAFAS should be investigated thoroughly due to its susceptibility to alteration.

There is high risk of water inrush and ground collapse accidents when tunnelling in karst areas. Based on the case study of an urban metro tunnel, this paper focuses on karst cave treatment and waterproofing strategies for earth pressure balancing (EPB) shield tunnelling in karst areas containing large amounts of karst caves and fissures. When the shield machine enters the karst area, water gush easily occurs, posing serious threats to tunnelling safety. The distribution characteristic of limestone fractures, karst caves, and fissures in the karst area were analyzed according to the geological survey results. Further, water inrush risk and engineering difficulties were analyzed. Subsequently, a compound karst cave treatment and waterproofing strategy for EPB shield tunnelling was proposed and implemented. Water inflow is successfully reduced and ground collapse accident is avoided using the compound karst cave treatment and waterproofing strategy.
