AbstractStochastic lattice structures are very powerful solutions for filling three-dimensional spaces using a generative algorithm. They are suitable for 3D printing and are well appropriate to structural optimization and mass distribution, allowing for high-performance and low-weight structures. The paper shows a method, developed in the Rhino-Grasshopper environment, to distribute lattice structures until a goal is achieved, e.g. the reduction of the weight, the harmonization of the stresses or the limitation of the strain. As case study, a cantilever beam made of Titan alloy, by means of SLS technology has been optimized. The results of the work show the potentiality of the methodology, with a very performing structure and low computational efforts.

Additive Manufacturing (AM) brought a revolution in parts design and production. It enables the possibility to obtain objects with complex geometries and to exploit structural optimization algorithms. Nevertheless, AM is far from being a mature technology and advances are still needed from different perspectives. Among these, the literature highlights the need of improving the frameworks that describe the design process and taking full advantage of the possibilities offered by AM. This work aims to propose a workflow for AM guiding the designer during the embodiment design phase, from the engineering requirements to the production of the final part. The main aspects are the optimization of the dimensions and the topology of the parts, to take into consideration functional and manufacturing requirements, and to validate the geometric model by computer-aided engineering software. Moreover, a case study dealing with the redesign of a piston rod is presented, in which the proposed workflow is adopted. Results show the effectiveness of the workflow when applied to cases in which structural optimization could bring an advantage in the design of a part and the pros and cons of the choices made during the design phases were highlighted.

Firstly, a two-level optimization procedure for composite structure is investigated with lamination parameters as design variables and MSC.Nastran as analysis tool. The details using lamination parameters as MSC.Nastran input parameters are presented. Secondly, with a proper equivalent stiffness laminate built to substitute for the lamination parameters, a two-level optimization method based on the equivalent stiffness laminate is proposed. Compared with the lamination parameters-based method, the layer thicknesses of the equivalent stiffness laminate are adopted as continuous design variables at the first level. The corresponding lamination parameters are calculated from the optimal layer thicknesses. At the second level, genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to identify an optimal laminate configuration to target the lamination parameters obtained. The numerical example shows that the proposed method without considering constraints of lamination parameters can obtain better optimal results.

Metaheuristic algorithm is a powerful optimization method, in which it can solve problemsby exploring the ordinarily large solution search space of these instances, that are believed tobe hard in general. However, the performances of these algorithms signicantly depend onthe setting of their parameter, while is not easy to set them accurately as well as completelyrelying on the problem's characteristic. To ne-tune the parameters automatically, manymethods have been proposed to address this challenge, including fuzzy logic, chaos, randomadjustment and others. All of these methods for many years have been developed indepen-dently for automatic setting of metaheuristic parameters, and integration of two or more ofthese methods has not yet much conducted. Thus, a method that provides advantage fromcombining chaos and random adjustment is proposed. Some popular metaheuristic algo-rithms are used to test the performance of the proposed method, i.e. simulated annealing, particle swarm optimization, dierential evolution, and harmony search. As a case study ofthis research is contrast enhancement for images of Cameraman, Lena, Boat and Rice. Ingeneral, the simulation results show that the proposed methods are better than the originalmetaheuristic, chaotic metaheuristic, and metaheuristic by random adjustment.

The problem of metal-composite wing structural optimization is discussed and a strategy is presented. Topology optimization method is applied to provide load transferring path of structure for concept design. Size, shape and other optimization method are used to provide detailed design for individual components. A three-phase optimization method is discussed for fiber reinforced composite laminate skin. Optimal parameters include ply angle, percentage, thickness, layer shape and sequence. The design of laminate for ease of manufacture is based on a set of manufacturing constraints. This paper deals with a total optimal design solution for aileron structure of an aircraft. The result satisfies all the requirements of strength and stability, and has obvious effect of weight loss.
