E-Business research and practice can be situated on following multiple levels: applications, technological issues, support and implementation (Ngai and Wat 2002). Here we consider technological components for realizing business processes and discuss their foundation architecture for technological enabling. The article provides an introduction to the terms, techniques and realization issues for eventdriven and service-oriented architectures. We begin with a definition of terms and propose a reference architecture for an event-driven service-oriented architecture (EDSOA). Possible applications in the area of E-Business and solution guidelines are considered in the second part of the article. Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) have gained momentum since their introduction in the last years. Seen as an approach to integrate heterogeneous applications within an enterprise architecture they are also used to design flexible and adaptable business processes. An SOA is designed as a distributed system architecture providing a good integration possibility of already existing application systems. Furthermore, SOA is mostly suitable for complex and large system landscapes.

The success of the Internet and the ongoing globalization led to a demand for new solutions to meet the requirements for ITsystems. The paradigm of service-oriented and event-driven architecture with fine grained and loosely coupled services tries to cope with those needs. Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Event Driven Architecture (EDA) are two acknowledged architectures for the development of business applications and information systems, which have evolved separately over the years. Today both architectures are acknowledged, but their synergy is not. There are numerous benefits of having an architecture that supports coexistence between operations and events, and composition of services based on operation invocation and event triggering. As part of our ongoing research work, we have tried to analyze in this paper, the basic design of Event based systems, issues that have to be addressed when event based approach is used for composing and coordinating web services. Then we have specified the techniques available that handle these issues, and gave a comparative study on these techniques. Finally we have attempted to sort out the unhandled/ partially handled issues that could be addressed as part of our research.

The tendency of future communication network is to set up an environment supporting network convergence as well as dynamic service collaboration. The recent Internet of Things (IoT) visions makes provision of User-Centric and active service to common users an important aim. Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) based on Web service technology works well for provision of request/response style passive service. However, services and devices in IoT or mobile environment may dynamically interact and cause a considerable amount of states changes, which calls for an active and more flexible framework to enable interactive service provision. In this paper we propose an Event-driven SOA based service integration framework (EDSIF) for provision of active service. Compared with traditional SOA based service provision method, this approach will facilitate real-time event processing as well as intelligent service coordination. We present the concept model of Event-driven SOA and the key components of EDSIF. We also illustrate the ECA4IoS rules for active service execution and the enhancement work of WSN broker towards an effective EDSIF.
