The purpose of this study was to examine the career development of underprepared college students using relational career theory. Specifically, the constructs of family influence, locus of control, and career decision-making self-efficacy were explored as they relate to perceived success in college. Significant correlations between external locus of control and family expectations, financial support, and values and beliefs were found indicating that greater family influence is related to external control. Additionally, higher levels of career decision-making self-efficacy were related to internal locus of control and informational support from family. These findings support previous research as well as theorized relational career theory connections.

The present study was done to explore the predictive utility of self-efficacy expectations in career decision-making, vocational indecision, occupational preference and self-efficacy expectations, external orientation and instrumentality in the status of academic and career choice. A set of questionnaires was administered to 95 Qatari men, 145 Qatari women, and 89 Kuwaiti women and each sample was examined separately. Analysis indicated that, compared with women, men had higher mean preference and self-efficacy expectations regarding nontraditional occupations and they had lower preference and self-efficacy expectations regarding traditional occupations. Also, students who had decided on an academic major or career, compared with those who had made tentative decisions and the undecided, had higher scores on self-efficacy expectations in career decision-making, occupational self-efficacy expectations, and instrumentality, and lower scores on vocational indecision and external orientation. Results and implications are discussed in the context of the Arabian environment.

A common belief about elite athletes is that they invest so much effort into the pursuit of their athletic careers that they fail to develop good career decision-making skills. Recent findings challenge that belief. The present study investigated career decision-making difficulties among 117 elite Australian athletes. Participants completed adapted versions of the Career Decision-Making Difficulties Questionnaire, the Athlete Identity Measurement Scale, the Career Decision-Making Self-efficacy Short Form, and the Work Locus of Control Scale. These elite athletes showed no evidence of career decision-making difficulties. Combinations of this set of variables accounted for 35% of the variance in decision status and 20% of the variance in career decision-making difficulties. Career decision-making self-efficacy was a major contributor in both instances. Internal locus of control was also identified as a desirable characteristic in the context of career decision-making. The implications of these findings are discussed.
