Activation energies determined from Arrhenius plot for cobalt-boron liquid quenched amorphous alloys in the temperature range 40 K < T < 300 K , suggest vacancy and interstitial formation to nucleate crystalline phases in an amorphous matrix preferably at sites where dangling bonds are present. Nucleation of crystallites with preferential tetragonal or orthorhombic structures is a self-evolving process due to catalytic presence of dangling bonds in an amorphous material and that the occurrence of negative activation energies support this evidence.

In recent years, the use of electrical methods has been improved considerably in several areas such as environment, agronomy, geophysics and geotechnics. Electrical resistivity may be used as a parameter in soil characterization; it may have many advantages for the determination of geotechnical factors influencing the behavior of soil. In this research, laboratory tests were carried out on natural sodic soil from the region of Ain Nouissy (Mostaganem) to investigate the geotechnical and chemical behavior of a natural soil using electrical resistivity measurements under various conditions. This study aims therefore to identify relationships between electrical resistivity of the soil and some physical and chemical parameters such as water content, porosity, salt concentration and pH. Moreover, electrical resistivity has been measured with the addition of salts into the natural soil. The results show that electrical resistivity reduced drastically with the addition of salt. The obtained results will be used to evaluate properties needed for soil characterization, as well as to track soil behavior with respect to salt concentration for use in soil remediation.

ABSTRACTWe have performed nanosecond-resolution measurements of the lateral electrical resistivity of thin metal films on insulating substrates. Comparison of transient resistivity measurements with optical reflectivity measurements and heat-flow calculations permits the determination of the position and velocity of a planar crystal/melt interface, and an estimate of undercooling during pulsed laser melting of metals. We report detailed results for rapid solidification of Ni, including the observation of hypercooling of .liquid Ni.

Electrical resistivity measurements of amorphous ( Fe x Co 100-x)83 B 17 alloys in the temperature range 40 K < T < 300 K have been obtained. We observed from the analysis of the resistivity data that there is no s-d interaction or Js-d coupling. An empirical relationship for estimating Θ D is suggested from the normalized electrical resistivity data, which holds good both for theoretical and estimated Θ D . For s-d interaction or Js-d coupling to occur in ferromagnetic amorphous alloys, ordering of ferromagnetic domains, i.e. Heisenberg interaction in a disordered matrix, would require temperatures of T ≤ Θ D /50 ≃ 0.02 Θ D .

Biogas produced in sanitary landfills consists in a potential source, formed by degradation of organic matter, this gas is constituted by CH4, CO2 and water vapor. Sanitary landfills represent important depository of organic matter with great energetic potential in Brazil, although presently with inexpressive use. Estimates for production or maintenance of productive rates of CH4 represent one of the main difficulties of technical order to the planning and continuity of collection systems for rational consumption of this resource. Electrical resistivity measurements are routinuously used in profiling oil wells for the determination of levels with accumulations of oil and gas, facing the contrast among fluids and rocks. This paper aims to evaluate eventual relationship among biogas flow quantified in surface drains of a waste cell in landfill, with characteristic patterns of in depth electrical resistivity. The integration of Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) lines allowed for the generation of 3D blocks and a clear distinction among zones of high biogas production, quantified in surface drains, with areas of high resistivity in depth. The results suggest the possibility of use of the method in studies to place drains in areas promising to the collection of biogas for energetic generation in sanitary landfill.
