A burn wound occurs as a result of exposure to high-temperature skin or chemicals and is a serious injury with systemic effects. The problem of treatment of thermal trauma is urgent for modern medicine. Despite the fact that the overall mortality rate has dropped significantly in recent years, research about the development of new treatments and technologies for patients with skin burns is extremely important. The aim of the study is to research the features of electron microscopic changes in the skin of rats during the month after burns of II-III degree against the background of the introduction of the first 7 days of 0.9% NaCl solution. Studies were performed on 180 laboratory white rats-males weighing 155-160 g. In the course of the experiment, the animals were divided into 2 groups: 1 – rats without thermal injury, which were infused with 0.9% NaCl solution at a dose of 10 ml/kg; group 2 – rats which infused 0.9% NaCl solution at a dose of 10 ml/kg for 7 days after skin burns. Burning skin damage was caused by applying to the lateral surfaces of the trunk of rats for 10 seconds four copper plates, heated in water at a constant temperature of 100 C. The total area of skin lesion in rats was 21-23%. Shaving of the lateral surfaces of rats’ trunk, catheterization of veins, staging of skin burns, and decapitation of animals (after 1, 3, 7, 14, 21 and 30 days) were performed under intravenous propofol anesthesia (calculated at 60 mg/kg body weight). Preparations for electron microscopic examination were prepared according to the standard procedure. The data obtained were studied using a PEM-125K electron microscope. Electron microscopic studies of the skin of animals after thermal trauma under the conditions of application of 0.9% NaCl solution have found that in the early stages of the experiment – the stage of shock and early toxemia (1, 3, 7 days) compensatory and adaptive changes of its structural components are combined with signs of destructive disorders. In the epitheliocytes of the epidermis of the affected area of the skin is the destruction of nuclei and cytoplasm. Vascular disorders in the dermis are combined with changes in fibroblasts, an intercellular substance of fibrous connective tissue. In the late stages of the experiment – the stages of late toxemia and septicotoxemia (14, 21 and 30 days), there is a further development and deepening of destructive-dystrophic changes of all structural components of the affected skin, they become irreversible. The processes of granulation tissue formation, its transformation into connective tissue, as well as marginal epithelialization are slow. This morphological condition of the burn wound indicates the need for the use of corrective drugs to reduce destructive changes and the activation of regenerative processes in the area of skin lesions.

Results of light and electron microscopic examinations of cysts of unknown etiology (CUEs) occurring in the gills of Atlantic mackerel, red hake, white hake, cod, haddock, and silver hake are presented. CUEs were found also in gills and viscera of winter flounder, Atlantic croaker, spot, windowpane flounder, and sand lance. CUEs measured 150–400 μm in diameter and consisted of an external fibrous cuticle, usually a thick median band, and a central core that frequently contained eosinophilic vesicles. Structures resembling mitochondria were found in the band and in vesicles of the core, but no other organelles were apparent. Cytochemical staining and ultramicroscopy revealed aggregates of glycogen in the core ground substance; no structural components were stained with Sudan black B or by the Feulgen technique. Extensive encapsulation of CUEs by fibroblasts was typical. Of 717 mackerel examined, 76.8% had CUEs in the gills; numbers ranged from 1 to 353 per fish. The prevalence and intensity of occurrence of CUEs increased with the age of the mackerel.

BACKGROUND: Postmenopausal women experience undesired symptoms that adversely affect their quality of life. In the recent years, a specific 12 - week fractional CO2 laser treatment has been introduced, with highly significant relief of symptoms.AIM: The aim of this paper is the identification of the early modifications of structural components of atrophic vaginal mucosa induced by laser irradiation, which is responsible for the restorative processes.MATERIAL AND METHODS: We investigated by microscopical, ultrastructural and biochemical methods the modifications of the structural components of postmenopausal atrophic vaginal mucosa tissues after 1 hour following a single fractional laser CO2 application.RESULTS: In one hour, the mucosal epithelium thickens, with the maturation of epithelial cells and desquamation at the epithelial surface. In the connective tissue, new papillae indenting the epithelium with newly formed vessels penetrating them, new thin fibrils of collagen III are also formed in a renewed turnover of components due to the increase of metalloproteinase - 2. Specific features of fibroblasts support stimulation of their activity responsible of the renewal of the extracellular matrix, with an increase of mechanical support as connective tissue and stimulation of growth and maturation to epithelium thanks to new vessels and related factors delivered.CONCLUSION: We found the activation of regenerative mechanisms expressed both in the connective tissue - with the formation of new vessels, new papillae, and new collagen - and in the epithelium with the associated thickening and desquamation of cells at the mucosal surface.

AbstractHistological and histochemical observations reveal that there are two clusters of acidic polysaccharide secreting glands at the opening of the mouth into the oesophagus in Pagurus bernhardus and Clibanarius longitarsus. Below these there are structurally similar glands in the connective tissue of the oesophagus. The epithelial cells lining the hepatopancreatic main duct show secretory activity and they secrete acidophilic granular secretions, which are chemically similar to vertebrate pancreatic zymogen granules. Electron microscopic studies reveal the presence of secretory cells in the hepatopancreatic duct and the synthesis of zymogens within these cells. The time of release of these granular secretions synchronizes with the release of the food material into the midgut.

✓ Previous physiological studies indicate that the olfactory region serves as a major pathway for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage into the lymphatic system. The present study was undertaken to determine the ultrastructural characteristics of this egress route. New Zealand White rabbits received a single bolus injection of the tracer ferritin (MW 400,000) into both lateral ventricles in such a manner as not to raise the intraventricular pressure above the normal level. The animals were sacrificed via intracardiac perfusion of fixative between less than 12 minutes and 4 hours following injection. The cribriform region was removed en bloc, decalcified, sectioned coronally, and prepared for light and electron microscopic examination. The arachnoid, dura, and periosteum surrounding the fila olfactoria passing through the cribriform plate merge together and form the perineurium, which consists of multiple layers of loosely overlapping cells with widely separated junctions and few vesicles. The perineurium surrounding the olfactory filaments at the superficial submucosal level is only one cell thick. The subarachnoid space freely communicates with the perineural space surrounding each filament. No morphological barrier between the perineural space and the loose submucosal connective tissue was identified. Whether or not the perineurium was multi- or singlelayered, ferritin was noted in abundance between the loosely overlapping perineural cells and in the submucosal connective tissue. The distribution of ferritin at 12 minutes was similar to that at 4 hours; however, the quantity of ferritin was increased at 4 hours. These results indicate that no significant barrier to CSF drainage is present at the rabbit cribriform region and that CSF reaches the submucosal region rapidly via open pathways.

Immersion of chorioallantoic membranes infected by influenza virus in ferritin-conjugated antibody globulin prior to fixation permits recognition of viral antigen at the cellular surface. In some cases the antigen is confined to sites at which viral particles appear to be in process of release, whereas in others it is present along the entire cellular surface. During infection part or all of the cellular membrane presumably is transformed so that it contains the antigenic and structural components which coat the virus during emergence. It is suggested that detached fragments of cytoplasm possessing surface hemagglutinin but incapable of initiating infection constitute at least one form of "incomplete virus."
