The β-Ti alloys exhibit excellent shape memory effect and superelastic properties. The interstitial atoms in the alloys have important effect on their physical and mechanical properties. For the interstitial atoms, the internal friction technique can be used to detect their distributions and status in the alloys. The anelastic relaxation in β-Ti alloys is discussed in this paper. β-Ti alloys possesses bcc (body center body) structure. The oxygen (O) atoms in in the alloys is difficult to be removed. The O atoms located at the octahedral sites in the alloys will produce relaxation under cycle stress. In addition, the interaction between the interstitial atoms and substitute atoms, e.g., Nb-O,Ti-O can also produce relaxation. Therefore, the observed relaxational internal friction peak during the measuring of internal friction is widened. The widened multiple relaxation peak can be revolved into Debye,s elemental peaks in Ti-based alloys. The relaxation peak is associated with oxygen movements in lattices under the application of cycle stress and the interactions of oxygen-substitute atoms in metastable β phase (βM) phase for the water-cooled specimens and in the stable β (βS) phase for the as-sintered specimens. The damping peak height is not only associated with the interstitial oxygen, but also the stability and number of βM in the alloys.

Background: Postural tone alterations are expressions of myofascial and, therefore, of structural, visceral, and emotional disorders. To prevent these disorders, this study proposes a quantitative investigation method which administers a postural evaluation questionnaire and a postural biomechanical evaluation to 100 healthy subjects. Methods: The reliability of the method is studied by comparing both assessments with digitized biometrics. In addition, 50 subjects undergo the biomechanical evaluation form twice, by four different operators, to study the intraoperative repeatability. Results: The results show a satisfactory overlap between the results obtained with the postural evaluation questionnaire and the postural biomechanical evaluation compared to computerized biometrics. Furthermore, intraoperative repeatability in the use of the biomechanical evaluation form is demonstrated thanks to a minimal margin of error. Conclusions: This experience suggests the importance of undertaking this path in both the curative and the preventive sphere on a large scale and on different types of people who easily, and even unknowingly, may face dysfunctional syndromes, not only structural and myofascial but also consequently of the entire body’s homeostasis.

AbstractThe fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, has been used as a model organism for the molecular and genetic dissection of sleeping behaviors. However, most previous studies were based on qualitative or semi-quantitative characterizations. Here we quantified sleep in flies. We set up an assay to continuously track the activity of flies using infrared camera, which monitored the movement of tens of flies simultaneously with high spatial and temporal resolution. We obtained accurate statistics regarding the rest and sleep patterns of single flies. Analysis of our data has revealed a general pattern of rest and sleep: the rest statistics obeyed a power law distribution and the sleep statistics obeyed an exponential distribution. Thus, a resting fly would start to move again with a probability that decreased with the time it has rested, whereas a sleeping fly would wake up with a probability independent of how long it had slept. Resting transits to sleeping at time scales of minutes. Our method allows quantitative investigations of resting and sleeping behaviors and our results provide insights for mechanisms of falling into and waking up from sleep.
