Purpose This paper aims to investigate the microstructural anisotropy of Ti-6Al-4V samples fabricated by selective laser melting. Design/methodology/approach Specimens are fabricated through a Renishaw AM400 selective laser melting machine. Three microstructures (as-built, 850°C annealed and 1,050°C annealed) and two building orientations, parallel (PA) and perpendicular (PE) to the building platform, are considered. Starting from in-depth microscopic observations and comprehensive electron backscattered diffraction imaging, the study addresses non-conventional techniques such as internal friction and electrical resistivity measurements to assess the anisotropy of the fabricated parts. Findings Microscope observations highlight a fine texture with columnar grains parallel to the building direction in the as-built and 850°C annealed samples. Besides, coarse grains characterized the 1,050°C annealed specimens. Internal friction measurements pointed out the presence of internal stress while storage modulus analyses appear sensitive to texture. Electrical resistivity is resulted to be dependent on grain orientation. Originality/value The work uses some novel characterization techniques to study the anisotropy and internal stresses of Ti-6Al-4V samples processed by selective laser melting. Mechanical spectroscopy results suitable in this kind of study, as it mimics the operating conditions of the material.

This paper describes the stability calculations of the most common road embankments slopes and their results using the modified Bishop method. By searching for the smallest possible effective angle of internal friction of the different slope steepness embankments, the possible different bases of the embankment, the weight of the embankment soil, the load caused by transport and the location of load application (shoulder) were evaluated. Analyzing the obtained calculation results, it was determined that at a slope of 1:2 (26.57°) steepness, to ensure slope stability, the calculated effective internal friction angle of the embankment soil should be φʹd ≥ 28.5°, and at a slope of 1:1.75 (29.74°) steepness – φʹd ≥ 29.8°. When the slope is 2:3 (33.69°) steepness, the stability of the slope cannot be guaranteed.

The direct shear tests of different dry density and moisture content samples at different temperatures of the frozen soil in the Qinghai-Tibet Railway embankment between Tanggula South and Anduo section were carried out to analyze the influence rules of each experimental factor on the mechanical properties of frozen soil during the freeze-thaw process. The results show the following. (1) When the frozen soil temperature is below 0°C and continues to drop during the freezing and thawing process, each sample shows the law of a significant increase in cohesion and a slight decrease in the internal friction angle. In the meantime, the cohesion obtained during the thawing process of the sample at the same temperature point is higher than that obtained during the freezing process. In contrast, the internal friction angles exhibit an opposite law, where the internal friction angle during the melting process is lower than the internal friction angle during the freezing process. After freezing-thawing action, it deserves to be mentioned that the cohesion increases slightly while the internal friction angles present a slight decrease trend compared to the initial state. (2) With the decrease in temperature and the gradual increase in cohesion, the temperature curve can be divided into a fast-growing section from 0 to −2°C, a slow-growing section from −2 to −8°C, and a second fast-growing section from −8 to −10°C owing to the combined effect of the pressure-thawing action and ice-water phase change. In addition, the rate of decrease in the internal friction angle also shows a similar pattern. (3) The cohesion and the internal friction angle of samples both tend to increase first and then decrease with the rise of the initial moisture content, and the critical initial moisture content is near the optimal moisture content of 15%. (4) Both the cohesion and the internal friction angle of the samples increase with dry density growth. The growth rate of cohesion will gradually increase as the temperature decreases. Moreover, the growth rate of cohesion of low dry density samples is more susceptible to temperature, while the internal friction angle growth rate is not affected by temperature.

Shear strength is an essential index for the evaluation of soil stability. Test results of the shear strength of scaled coarse-grained soil (CGS for short) are usually not able to accurately reflect the actual properties and behaviors of in situ CGS due to the scale effect. Therefore, this study focuses on the influence of the scale effect on the shear strength of scaled CGS, which has an important theoretical significance and application for the strength estimation of CGS in high earth-rock dam engineering. According to previous studies, the main cause of the scale effect for scaled CGS is the variation of the gradation structure as well as the maximum particle size (dmax), in which the gradation structure as a characteristic parameter can be expressed by the gradation area (S). A total of 24 groups of test soil samples with different gradations were designed by changing the maximum particle size dmax and gradation area S. Direct shear tests were conducted in this study to quantitatively explore the effect of the gradation structure and the maximum particle size on the shear strength of CGS. Test results suggest that the shear strength indexes (i.e., the cohesion and internal friction angle) of CGS present an increasing trend with the improvement of the maximum particle size dmax, and thus a logarithmic function relationship among c, φ, and dmax is presented. Both cohesion (c) and internal friction angle (φ) are negatively related to the gradation area (S) in most cases. As a result, an empirical relationship between c, φ, and S is established based on the test results. Furthermore, a new prediction model of shear strength of CGS considering the scale effect is proposed, and the accuracy of this model is verified through the test results provided by relevant literature. Finally, the applicability of this model to different types of CGS is discussed.

Abstract Study the consequence of adding fly ash (FA) on the Atterberg limit; cohesions and internal friction of angles of the verified soil was the aim of this search. The tested soil according to the system of unified soil classification was (CH) group. Fly ash (FA) was added to the tested soil samples in 1, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 & 18 % by weight of samples. This study shows that once the tested soil mixed with (FA); the values of cohesion reduced; while the values of the angles of internal frictions increases. The drop in the soil sample cohesion when mixed with 18% of (FA) was 34%, were noteworthy increase in the angles of internal friction. For all soil samples as the percentages of adding (FA) increase, the decrease in the index of plasticity amounts increase also at different rates. The adding of (FA) produced a reduction in the liquid limits; plastic limits and henceforth the plasticity index of the tested soil sample at rate of 43%, 48% and 37% correspondingly. The plasticity index losses took place at the first 3%, at a lesser rate, then the rate increased at 18% of additive and because nearly constant.

High-temperature internal friction in an amorphous CuTi alloy is investigated. Exponential regions with different activation energies are observed on the dependence of internal friction on temperature on both sides of the glass transition temperature. An exponential increase in the background of internal friction with temperature in both sites is associated with the migration of vacancy-like defects in the amorphous structure under the influence of mechanical stresses, while frozen defects of constant concentration migrate to the glass transition temperature. After the transition to a state of thermodynamic equilibrium , the concentration the number of migrating defects increases exponentially. Based on the experimental results of measuring the high-temperature background, estimates of the activation energy of migration and the formation of vacancies of similar defects in the amorphous structure of the alloy under study are made.

The traditional treatment of red clay using inorganic materials leads to many serious environmental problems. The study investigates the mechanical properties of red clay using an environmental-friendly material—xanthan gum—through confined compression, direct shear, and scanning electron microscope tests. At the macroscale, xanthan gum content and curing age had obvious effects on the compressibility, presenting the treated red clay was in the category of low compressibility which gradually increased when xanthan gum content exceeded 1.5%. The xanthan gum content and curing age also had significant influences on the cohesion but not on the internal friction angle. The shear strength of red clay can be improved by increasing the cohesion without obviously changing the friction characteristics. After curing for 28 days, the cohesion and internal friction angle of 2.0% xanthan gum-treated soil were effectively improved to 170.44 kPa and 20.56°, which were increased by 69.79% and 9.36°, respectively, compared with untreated red clay. Microscopic analysis indicated that the strengthening mechanism by xanthan gum was derived from changing the arrangement characteristics of soil particles and forming hard biopolymer-red clay matrices. The proper xanthan gum can effectively wrap clay particles and fill pore spaces. However, the extensive stacking of gels would also reduce the effective connection of clay particles and produce local weak points in the soil, resulting in attenuation of mechanical properties. This study enriches the treatment measure of red clay and provides beneficial experiences for biopolymer application on special clay.

The results of the direct shear test on Jerash expansive soil show the effect of the initial water content on the cohesion (c) and on the angel of internal friction ( ) [shear strength parameters].it show that, as the initial water increase, the cohesion (c) of Jerash expansive soil also increase up to the shrinkage limit, after that increase of water even small amount, decrease the cohesion of the soil. On the other hand, the results of direct shear test show also  that as the water content increase, the angle of internal friction ( )remain unchanged up to shrinkage limit , any increase of water cause a large decrease on the angle of internal friction of Jerash expansive soil.
