Excess volumes of the three binary mixtures: (1) cyclohexane – diethyl ketone, (2) cyclohexane–benzonitrile, and (3) toluene–benzonitrile have been measured at 303.15 K using a dilatometer. Excess volumes of the first two systems are positive over the whole range of composition and are negative for the third system. The measured excess volumes and the excess heats of mixing reported in the literature for the three binary systems have been analysed in the light of the statistical theory of liquid mixtures developed by Flory. The analysis has shown that the theory in its modified form is approximately applicable to the mixtures cyclohexane–diethylketone and cyclohexane–benzonitrile.

We consider a model operatorHassociated with a system describing three particles in interaction, without conservation of the number of particles. The operatorHacts in the direct sum of zero-, one-, and two-particle subspaces of thefermionic Fock space ℱa(L2(𝕋3))overL2(𝕋3). We admit a general form for the "kinetic" part of the HamiltonianH, which contains a parameterγto distinguish the two identical particles from the third one. (i) We find a critical valueγ*for the parameterγthat allows or forbids the Efimov effect (infinite number of bound states if the associated generalized Friedrichs model has a threshold resonance) and we prove that only forγ<γ*the Efimov effect is absent, while this effect exists for anyγ>γ*. (ii) In the caseγ>γ*, we also establish the following asymptotics for the numberN(z)of eigenvalues ofHbelowz<Emin=infσessH:limz→EminNz/logEmin-z=𝒰0γ  𝒰0γ>0, for allγ>γ*.

Abstract Diffusion in a cylinder followed by catarometric analysis allowed to measure the inter-diffusion coefficient D in the systems H2-HD, H2-D2 and HD-D2 at 24 °C and 760 Torr with an estimated error of ±1% . A dependence of D on concentration did not show up.A least square fit combining the new measurements with less accurate earlier ones on system containing tritium, yields the three coefficients of the expansion(√μ̅D)I II = 0.0006 mI II-0.023(m213-m224) + 0.010 (m2AC + m2BD - m2ac - m2bd).μ is the reduced mass of the two molecules of a mixture, and in general xik=(xi-xk) / (xi + xk). Roman numbers as indices indicate mixtures, arabic ones molecules and letters atoms. As for the masses mI=m1 + m3, mII=m2+m4, m1= mA+mC, m3= mB + mD,m2 + mc, m4=mb+md.The signs of the first two coefficients in the expansion agree with the second Chapan-Enskog approximation, and that of the third coefficient with the model of loaded spheres.

Component yields and forage quality were evaluated in established stands of alfalfa seeded alone and in binary mixtures with smooth bromegrass, orchardgrass, or timothy. Forage yields and quality were determined at three annual harvests in the third and fourth years after seeding. Weed yields in alfalfa seeded alone were significantly greater than those in the alfalfa–orchardgrass mixture. Average weed content was 24, 17, 2, and 15% for the alfalfa seeded alone, alfalfa–bromegrass, alfalfa–orchardgrass, and alfalfa–timothy, respectively. Seeding alfalfa with orchardgrass increased first harvest and annual forage yields while reducing alfalfa yield. Yields of orchardgrass often exceeded those of bromegrass or timothy. In the first harvest each year, crude protein was reduced and acid detergent fiber and neutral detergent fiber increased by including orchardgrass. Neutral detergent fiber was greater in alfalfa–orchardgrass than in the alfalfa seeded alone at most harvests. There were no consistent differences among the alfalfa seeded alone and the other mixtures in yield or quality.

In the course of several 21-cm observing programmes being carried out by the Leiden Observatory with the 25-meter telescope at Dwingeloo, a fairly complete, though inhomogeneous, survey of the regionl11= 0° to 66° at low galactic latitudes is becoming available. The essential data on this survey are presented in Table 1. Oort (1967) has given a preliminary report on the first and third investigations. The third is discussed briefly by Kerr in his introductory lecture on the galactic centre region (Paper 42). Burton (1966) has published provisional results of the fifth investigation, and I have discussed the sixth in Paper 19. All of the observations listed in the table have been completed, but we plan to extend investigation 3 to a much finer grid of positions.
