Mechanically alloyed aluminium powder was prepared by attrition-milling for 10 hours in the presence of a wax. Milled powders were annealed in vacuum at different temperatures (500, 575, 600, 625 and 650°C). Compacts were consolidated starting from unannealed and from 600°Cannealed powders. Studies by SEM microfractography and quantitative metallography, to investigate the influence of Fe-Al intermetallics on compacts fracture, have been carried out. It is concluded that fracture takes place at regions where the area occupied by the intermetallics is high and intermetallics particles are big. Intermetallic particle size can be controlled by an appropriated heat treatment.

The influence of prolonged ageing on the precipitation process of the secondary phases in an Fe-Ni superalloy of A-286 type has been studied. The samples were subjected to a solution heat treatment at 980°C for 2 h and water quenched, and then aged at temperatures of 715, 750 and 780°C at holding times from 0.5 to 500 h. Structural investigations were conducted using TEM and X-ray diffraction methods. The X-ray phase analyses performed on the isolates were obtained by anodic dissolution of the solid samples. After solution heat treatment the alloy has the structure of twinned austenite with a small amount of undissolved precipitates, such as carbide TiC, carbonitride TiC0.3N0.7, nitride TiN0.3, carbosulfide Ti4C2S2, Laves phase Ni2Si, and boride MoB. The application of ageing causes precipitation processes of γ-Ni3(Al,Ti), G (Ni16Ti6Si7), η (Ni3Ti), β (NiTi) and σ (Cr0.46Mo0.40Si0.14) intermetallic phases, as well as the carbide M23C6. It was found that the main phase precipitating during alloy ageing was the γ intermetallic phase.

The influence of ultrasound on the main regularities of the formation and growth of the diffusion zone at the interlayer boundary of an explosion-welded layered composite material of Al-Cu systems is investigated. It is proved that the effect of ultrasound contributes to the reduction of the latent period of the nucleation of intermetallic phases at the interlayer boundary, lowers the temperature of the beginning of the eutectic transformation (by about 10 ° C), but at the same time does not affect the phase composition of the diffusion zone as a result of homogeneous reactions at the boundary of contact of solids. It has been established that the thickness of the diffusion zone, with the duration of the supplied acoustic vibrations, ensures the absence of cracks in the diffusion zone, leading to delamination of the material, increases by 30-40% at a fixed temperature of intense diffusion.

The powder-in-tube MgB2 wires were prepared by high energy milling of Mg and B powder. The powder was not mechanically alloyed for 2h short milling time. However, the MgB2 grains in wires were very small (20~100nm) and resemble the dimple after post-heat treatment. The clear evidence for transcrystlline fracture was observed. It indicated that the grain connection was greatly improved and the fluxing pinning was significantly enhanced. Another point to view was no intermediate annealing during the whole rolling process. The influence of the post-heat treatment on the transport current density was studied. Despite the lower Tc of about 35K, the transport current density reached to 3×104A/cm2 at 15K and 3.5T for wires sintered at 700°C.

AbstractThe microstructure of 95Pb-5Sn flip-chip solder bonds deposited on Cr/Cu/Au metallisation pads has been studied using both light and electron analysis techniques. The presence of Sn-Cu- Au ternary intermetallic phases was detected within the Pb-rich matrix at significant distances from the originally deposited interface. The distribution of the phases present after the solder has undergone a reflow heat treatment can be interpreted using recent equilibrium ternary diagram data. An investigation was also made into the effects of various non-reflow heat treatments at carefully chosen temperatures, to qualitatively evaluate the extent of solid state diffusion and the resultant phase distribution.

Abstract Surface coatings protection is one of the most important processes ensuring efficient and economic use of basic materials, mostly of lower-quality. At interface of clad and basic material intermetallic phases are formed, representing quite different matrix with dissimilar properties unlike the welded materials. One type of surface coating is explosive bonding which belongs to group of pressure welding. The work is focused on interface shape line, inhomogeneities in vicinity of the wave joint both in basic material and in vicinity of weld line of the Ti and Cr/Ni stainless steel (SS) matrix. Investigated weld was both in as-received state and after heat treatment carried out at 600°C/90 minutes/air. Presented phases have been identified using X-ray diffraction performed by synchrotron. The Tiα, Fe-fcc, Fe-bcc and intermetallic phases Fe2Ti were detected at interface area.
