The phenomenon responsible for the different apparent powers measured in a subsystem of a three-phase star-configured system, based on the voltage reference point, was identified in this paper using specific components of the instantaneous powers, as a result of applying the conservation of energy principle to the entire system. The effects of the phenomenon were determined using a proposed apparent power component referred to as the neutral-displacement power, whose square is the quadratic difference between the apparent powers of a subsystem, measured using two voltage reference points. The neutral-displacement power is a component of the apparent power, which is determined using the values of the zero-sequence voltages and the line currents in that subsystem. Expressions of the proposed power were derived using the Buchholz apparent power formulations. The validation of the derived expressions was checked in the laboratory and in a real-world electrical network, using a well-known commercial analyzer and a prototype developed by the authors.

This paper present improved Walsh function (IWF) algorithm as an alternative approach for active and reactive power measurement in linear and nonlinear, balanced and unbalanced sinusoidal three phase load system. It takes advantage of Walsh function unified approach and its intrinsic high level accuracy as a result of coefficient characteristics and energy behaviour representation. The developed algorithm was modeled on the Matlab Simulink software; different types of load, linear and nonlinear were also modeled based on practical voltage and current waveforms and tested with the proposed improved Walsh algorithm. The IEEE standard 1459-2000 which is based on fast Fourier transform FFT approach was used as benchmark for the linear load system while a laboratory experiment using Fluke 435 power quality analyzer PQA which complies with IEC/EN61010-1-2001standards was used to validate the improved algorithm for nonlinear load measurement. The results showed that the algorithm has the potential to effectively measure three phase power components under different load conditions.

The electric meter is a direct tool by which power enterprise charges for electricity Tariff. This paper describes software and hardware designs of MSP430F149 SCM as the core control processor and smart remote transmission three-phase electric meter with the use of power collection special chip CS5460A to complete power measurement. This instrument integrates data monitoring and measurement of the power with LCD. And it can realize the functions of data remote transmission through communication connection between ENC28J60 chip and main controller and easily of real-time monitoring, data collection, system monitoring. This electric meter has some advantages such as powerful function, low cost, strong disturb-resistant ability, etc. and can meet the management requirement of the electricity energy intelligence, which is one of the main development trend in the future. This smart power data collection system will get a good application in the power industry informatization process .

A procedure to measure reactive power in three-phase unbalanced circuits using two wattmeters is presented. The total reactive power is obtained as an algebraic sum of two wattmeter readings. The voltage coil circuit of each wattmeter is suitably modified.

This paper discusses the definition of active and reactive power in wavelet domain. Different definitions for three-phase power may cause significant changes in the measurement equipment topology. The simple phase shift using the Akagi method between current and voltage for reactive power measurement is discussed. A new power quality analysis technique (pqAT) is proposed.
