This study was focused on the effect of VC addition on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the prepared ultrafine grained cemented carbides. VC was added to the rawoxide materials which were synthesized to the WC-Co composite powder by the in-situ reduction and carbonization process. The ultrafine grained WC-Co alloys were fabricated by the spark plasma sintering technique using the prepared WC-Co composite powder. The phase constitution, microstructure characteristics and mechanical properties of the sintered ultrafine grained cemented carbides were analyzed quantitatively. The study proposed that VC plays a significant role in decreaseing the grain size of the prepared WC-Co alloy. The ultrafine grained WC-Co alloy with high comprehensive properties can be obtained as an appropriate addition of VC in the developed process.

Ultrafine tungsten carbide-nickel (WC-Ni) cemented carbides with varied fractions of silicon carbide (SiC) nanowhisker (0–3.75 wt.%) were fabricated by spark plasma sintering at 1350°C under a uniaxial pressure of 50 MPa with the assistance of vanadium carbide (VC) and tantalum carbide (TaC) as WC grain growth inhibitors. The effects of SiC nanowhisker on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the as-prepared WC-Ni cemented carbides were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that during spark plasma sintering (SPS) Ni may react with the applied SiC nanowhisker, forming Ni2Si and graphite. Scanning electron microscopy examination indicated that, with the addition of SiC nanowhisker, the average WC grain size decreased from 400 to 350 nm. However, with the additional fractions of SiC nanowhisker, more and more Si-rich aggregates appeared. With the increase in the added fraction of SiC nanowhisker, the Vickers hardness of the samples initially increased and then decreased, reaching its maximum of about 24.9 GPa when 0.75 wt.% SiC nanowhisker was added. However, the flexural strength of the sample gradually decreased with increasing addition fraction of SiC nanowhisker.

Spark Plasma Sintering – new technology for obtaining tool materials. Cemented carbides are a valued tool material used for tools to process, among others, wood-based materials. They are traditionally obtained using high temperatures and long periods. New electric current activated sintering methods make it possible to obtain sinters with good mechanical properties in a short time and low temperature. This paper presents a comparative analysis of conventional and advanced SPS (Spark Plasma Sintering) technology of obtaining cemented carbides.

Ultrafine grained WC-12Co-0.2VC (named UYG12V) cemented carbides were prepared via the two-step spark plasma sintering (SPS) in this study. First, the effects of the sintering temperature on the relative density and WC grain size of UYG12V cemented carbides were studied. The results show that regular WC grains form when sintered at 1300 °C. The sintered body begins to rapidly densify and WC grains grow slowly when sintered at 1200 °C. Thus, the first-step (T1) and the second-step (T2) temperatures in the two-step SPS of UYG12V are 1300 °C and 1200 °C, respectively. The effect of the holding time during the first and second steps on the mechanical properties was also studied. The results show that the UYG12V cemented carbide sintered at 1300 °C for 3 min and then at 1200 °C for 5 min has the best comprehensive mechanical properties, exhibiting the average particle size, Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, relative density, and bending strength of 271 nm, 18.06 GPa, 12.25 MPa m1/2, 99.49%, and 1960 MPa, respectively.

Ultrafine WC-Ni cemented carbides with addition of SiC whisker (SiCw) were fabricated by spark plasma sintering. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated cemented carbides were investigated. It was found that the addition of SiC whisker had no obvious influence on the phase compositions of the cemented carbides, but the mean grain size of the cemented carbides decreased as the addition fraction of SiC whisker increased. The fabricated WC-Ni cemented carbides presented the highest hardness when 0.75 wt% SiC whisker was added. However, the addition of SiC whisker was detrimental to the flexural strength of the cemented carbides because of the formation of inhomogeneous microstructure in the WC-Ni cemented carbides.
