A new species of gymnostome, Urotricha vitrea n. sp., is proposed. The morphological characterization of this new freshwater ciliate is as follows: 46–27 μm × 43–26 μm in size; a spherical macronucleus; 20–23 somatic kineties; a caudal cilium; brosse with 4, 3, 2 rows of pairs of kinetosomes; and circumoral infraciliature with 13–16 pairs of kinetosomes. In addition, the conjugation process of this species is reported. It includes three maturation divisions and three synkaryon divisions.

The genus Colaconema, containing endophytic algae associated with economically important macroalgae, is common around the world, but has rarely been reported in Taiwan. A new species, C. formosanum, was found attached to an economically important local macroalga, Sarcodia suae, in southern Taiwan. The new species was confirmed based on morphological observations and molecular analysis. Both the large subunit of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rbcL) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI-5P) genes showed high genetic variation between our sample and related species. Anatomical observations indicated that the new species presents asexual reproduction by monospores, cylindrical cells, irregularly branched filaments, a single pyrenoid, and single parietal plastids. Our research supports the taxonomic placement of C. formosanum within the genus Colaconema. This study presents the third record of the Colaconema genus in Taiwan.

During an investigation into the microfungi on Dracaena fragrans in Thailand, a saprobic taxon belonging to Glomerellaceae was collected. Based on morphological characterization and combined phylogenetic analyses of ITS, GAPDH, CHS-1, ACT and TUB2 sequence data from the sexual and asexual morphs our taxon was identified as a new species of Colletotrichum. Colletotrichum dracaenigenum sp. nov. is introduced here with a full description, colour photographs of morphological characteristics and a phylogenetic tree to show the placement of the new taxon in the gloeosporioides species complex.

Moelleriella sinensis, a fungal pathogen infecting whitefly nymphs (Hemiptera), is described and illustrated as a new species from Wu Yi Mountain in Fujian province, southeastern China. This species is characterized by producing a pale brown spore mass around whitish to pale yellow pulvinate stroma. In surveys of entomopathogenic fungal diversity, only the anamorphic state was found in collected stroma. Phylogenetic analyses using the nucleotide sequences derived from the nuclear ribosomal large subunit rRNA gene, RNA polymerase subunit 1, and translation elongation factor 1α, coupled to morphological characterization supports the placement of the isolate as a new species in a distinct lineage within Moelleriella.

During a survey to characterize the diversity of sooty blotch and flyspeck fungi in China, we obtained an isolate from a fungal colony exhibiting sooty blotch and flyspeck signs on the petiole of brown bollygum (Litsea glutinosa) in Guangxi, China. Based on phylogenetic analysis and morphological characterization, a new species, Zasmidium litseae is introduced. The new species is characterized by its swollen, straight or geniculate conidiogenous cells.

This study contributes to the morphological characterization of Ombrophytum villamariensis, a new species of Neotropical Balanophoraceae recently described for Colombia. The study revealed the presence of diagnostic characters in the pollen grain such as small size and a circular endoaperture. Unlike other species, only tricolporate pollen grains were observed.

A new species of Neostagonospora associated with Spinifex littoreus was found. Endophytic isolates remained sterile, but a specimen collected on living leaves could be used for morphological characterization and cultivation. The ITS sequences from the cultures as well as from direct total DNA extraction from the plant indicated conspecificity and a broader geographic distribution than the single field collection, but yielded low support on the genus level in phylogenetic analyses. Analysis of the RPB2 sequences, however, sufficiently supported a placement of the species in Neostagonospora. The shape of conidiogenous cells as well as numbers of septa and sizes of conidia are useful characters for distinguishing Neostagonospora species.

AbstractA new species belonging to the genus Belondira is described from natural areas in Iran. Belondira coomansi n. sp. is characterized by its general size, the dimensions and appearance of its lip region, presence of distinct labial and post-labial sclerotization, the length of the odontostyle and its inconspicuous lumen and aperture, the length of the neck and its pharyngeal expansion, the reduction of the female anterior genital branch to a simple uterine sac, a very short posterior uterus, the anterior position of the vulva, the length and shape of the caudal region with distinctly thick cuticle at its tip, the length of the spicules, and the presence of only one pair of ventromedian supplements. The new species is close to Belondira brevibulba, B. sacchari, B. tenuidens and B. thornei, and it is compared to them. Molecular characterization (D2–D3 expansion segments of the rRNA large subunit) of the new species is also provided, representing only the second species of this genus for which any DNA sequence data are available.

We discovered the immature stages of Wyeomyia shannoni Lane & Cerqueira, 1942, unknown for almost 80 years, and found that they, as well as the adult male, are identical with those previously described for Sabethes (Peytonulus) paradoxus Harbach, 2002. Consequently, the species described by Lane and Cerqueira is here considered a senior synonym of Sa. paradoxus and is transferred to the genus Sabethes, hereafter named Sabethes (Peytonulus) shannoni (Lane & Cerqueira, 1942), comb. n. As the name shannoni is preoccupied in the genus Sabethes, the species known as Sabethes (Sabethes) shannoni Cerqueira, 1961 is here renamed Sabethes (Sabethes) cerqueirai Nascimento-Pereira, Neves, Lourenço-de-Oliveira & Motta, nom. n. We improved the morphological characterization of Sa. (Pey.) shannoni (Lane & Cerqueira) by including an illustration of the female genitalia, larval mouthparts and the female genital lobe of the pupa. Finally, we describe and illustrate a new species of Sabethes closely related to Sa. (Pey.) shannoni, named Sabethes (Peytonulus) harbachi Nascimento-Pereira, Guimarães, Lourenço-de-Oliveira & Motta, sp. n.
