Energy balances have been historically conceived based on a supply-side perspective, providing neither detailed information about energy conversion into useful services nor the effects that may be induced by the application of policies in other sectors to energy consumption. This article proposes an approach to a thorough assessment of the impact of efficiency policies on final energy uses, focusing on residential space heating and cooling, and capable of: (1) quantifying final useful services provided and (2) accounting for the global impact of efficiency policies on final energy use, taking advantage of Input–Output analysis. This approach is applied in five cities of Argentina. Firstly, the quantity of energy service provided (i.e., level of thermal comfort) for each city is evaluated and compared with the defined target. It is found out that heating comfort is guaranteed approximately as established, whereas in the cooling case the provision is twice the established level. Secondly, primary energy consumption of heating and cooling services is evaluated before and after different efficiency improvement policies. The results show that the major primary energy saving (52%) is obtained from the upgrading appliances scenario and reflect the importance of accounting for embodied energy in goods and services involved in interventions.

In order to understand the impact of summer drought on dry deposition of tropospheric ozone (O<sub>3</sub>), we compared severe and mild drought periods of summer 2018 in a mountain Norway spruce forest at Bílý Kříž, Beskydy Mts. An eddy covariance technique was applied to measure diurnal courses of the ecosystem O<sub>3</sub> and CO<sub>2</sub> fluxes. Low O<sub>3</sub> deposition was recorded in the morning and evening, while the highest CO<sub>2</sub> and O<sub><sup>3</sup></sub> fluxes were recorded during the central hours of the day. Total O<sub>3</sub> deposition during severe drought (soil humidity 13%) was significantly higher than the deposition during the mild drought period (soil humidity 19%). Our data indicate that high vapour pressure deficit and low soil humidity during severe drought led to the stomatal closure, while non-stomatal O<sub>3</sub> deposition, associated with chemical reactions of O<sub>3</sub> with NO and volatile organic compounds, are responsible for higher total O<sub>3</sub> deposition during the severe drought period. Therefore, we assume that under severe drought stomatal O<sub>3</sub> uptake decreases but non-stomatal depositions to forest ecosystems substantially increase.

Wet sclerophyll forests of south-eastern Australia typically experience wildfire once or twice a century. However, disturbance regimes have changed drastically in recent decades due to clear-fell logging and altered fire regimes. To date, botanical research on disturbances in wet-forests has focussed on individual elements of disturbance regimes, such as intensity, at single points in time, largely neglecting past disturbance history. Studies of the impact of previous disturbance history on plant responses to successive disturbance events are important to our understanding of vegetation dynamics. Here we investigate the response of wet-forest understorey species to two important elements of disturbance regimes – timing and type – and trajectories of change in these vegetation communities. In surveys separated by 15 years over 128 sites, we recorded the frequency of occurrence of 21 understorey species from stands with disturbance histories ranging from 4 years post clear-fell logging to 150 years post wildfire. Approximately half our sites were burnt in the 2009 Black Saturday wildfires. This provided an opportunity to examine the effects of inter-fire interval and the legacy effects of clear-fell logging. Generalised linear mixed modelling showed that many of the species studied appear to be at risk of population decline as a result of clear-fell logging. Unlike wildfire, clear-fell logging led to changes in the understorey, having a long-lasting impact on the presence of key wet-forest taxa that rely on vegetative regeneration. These include large shade-bearing shrubs like Hedycarya angustifolia R.Cunn., Bedfordia arborescens Hochr. and Olearia argophylla (Labill.) Benth., which were resilient to recurrent wildfire but responded negatively to recent wildfire in sites with a history of clear-fell logging. Negative effects of a short inter-fire interval were limited to a few species.
