Interspecies differences in the response of fluorescence transients to changes in growth irradiance reflect different photoacclimation strategies in two diatom species

Using the TensorFlow Object Detection API, an approach to identifying and registering Baikal diatom species Synedra acus subsp. radians has been tested. As a result, a set of images was formed and training was conducted. It is shown that аfter 15000 training iterations, the total value of the loss function was obtained equal to 0,04. At the same time, the classification accuracy is equal to 95%, and the accuracy of construction of the bounding box is also equal to 95%.

As a result of study of 18 samples, collected in Lake Teletskoye and inflowing rivers in 1992–1995, 34 diatom species of the genus Navicula Bory were found. Among them 21 taxa are new for the studied region, 7 species (Navicula arkona, N. hangaica, N. cf. pseudoreinhardtii, N. ricardae, N. scaniae, N. schweigeri, N. suecicarum) are recorded for the first time in Russia. One new species (N. pseudoharmoniae sp. nov.) is described. It is compared with N. harmoniae and N. digitoconvergens.

On the basis of the studied materials from the ultraoligotrophic lake Elgygytgyn (Chukotka), a rare for the flora of Russia diatom species Navicula schmassmannii was recorded. In the studied populations of the species a wide variability of morphological quantitative (valve length and width, the number of stria in 10 μm) and qualitative (the shape of the valve and the central area) features was marked. It made the basis for emending of the species diagnosis.

Seven species of fish were studied in an attempt to determine interspecies differences in the amount and type of agonistic behavior shown. Fish in each species were paired and the frequency of attacks shown during a 5-min. observation session was recorded. An observation session was held for 16 pairs of fish of the same species on 5 consecutive days. It was found that bluegill showed the highest frequency of attacks, then green sunfish, largemouth bass, rainbow trout, black crappie, and yellow perch in that order. No attacks were recorded for walleyes during any of the observation sessions. Qualitative differences shown in agonistic behavior among the various species are also discussed.

In continuation of an earlier paper on Pleurosigma species with an (almost) non-sigmoid valve and raphe sternum, a comparative study was made in LM and SEM of Pleurosigma subrectum and P. acus. For P. subrectum, slides and a subsample of the type material were examined. For P. acus no unmounted material permitting SEM investigation is extant; a sample containing specimens fully matching the type in LM was therefore used as epitype material for SEM. The original data on striation of P. acus are emended. No morphological differences indicating separate specific status of these two taxa were observed and P. acus is therefore here designated a heterotypic synonym of P. subrectum. From the data now available, this is a very widely distributed species. The study demonstrates the indispensable role of collections for investigations on the diversity and distribution of diatom species.

The interactive effects of irradiance and N on growth of young tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were studied. Plants were grown at 70 or 300 μmol photons m–2 s–1, hereafter referred to as 'low' and 'high' irradiance, and at a range of exponential N supply rates (70–370 mg g–1 d–1) or at a constant concentration in the nutrient solution of 12 mM NO3–. At both irradiance levels, leaf area ratio was more important than net assimilation rate (NAR) in explaining effects of N on growth at mild N limitation. However, at severe N limitation, NAR became the most important parameter, as indicated by calculated growth response coefficients. Furthermore, this study shows that N supply and growth irradiance interacted strongly. The decrease of specific leaf area with increasing N limitation and increasing growth irradiance correlated with increasing leaf dry mass percentage and starch concentration. Furthermore, at low irradiance, plants partitioned more dry mass to the stem. Dry mass partitioning to roots increased with decreasing plant N concentration, and this relation appeared to be independent of irradiance. Shading increased plant N concentration and decreased dry mass partitioning to roots. Also, the relationship between plant N concentration and N partitioning to different plant organs was largely independent of growth irradiance.
