Magnetically separable strontium hexaferrite SrFe12O19 was prepared using the chemical coprecipitation method, and the nanostructured material was characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), and BET analysis. The SEM images showed the homogeneity of the chemical composition of SrFe12O19 and uniform distribution of size and morphology. The pore size of the nanomaterial and its specific area were determined by BET measurements. Strontium hexaferrite SrFe12O19 exhibited a strong magnetic field, which is highly suitable in the heterogeneous catalysis as it can be efficiently separated from the reaction. The magnetic nanocatalyst showed high activity and environmentally benign heterogeneous catalysts for the epoxide ring-opening with amines affording β-amino alcohols under solvent-free conditions. When unsymmetrical epoxides were treated in the presence of aromatics amines, the regioselectivity was influenced by the electronic and steric factors. Total regioselectivity was observed for the reactions performed with aliphatic amines. The magnetically SrFe12O19 nanocatalyst showed excellent recyclability with continuously good catalytic activities after four cycles.

An efficient method for the synthesis of 3-arylidenechroman-4-ones has been developed under solvent free conditions using grinding technique. Grinding of variously substituted chroman-4-ones with aromatic aldehydes in presence of anhydrous barium hydroxide at room temperature give 3-arylidenechroman-4-ones in high yield (75-92%). Products are obtained by just acidification of the reaction mixture in ice cold water. Reaction in solid state, with enhanced rate, high selectivity and manipulative simplicity are the attractive features of this environmentally benign protocol. The chroman-4-one derivatives required for the reaction have been obtained by polyphosphoric acid (PPA) catalysed cyclisation of phenoxypropanoic acids under microwave irradiations.

A library of 3,4-dihydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ones/thiones derivatives were synthesized via Biginelli condensation reaction of β-keto esters, aryl aldehydes and urea/thiourea under solvent-free conditions utilizing nickel nanoparticles under microwave irradiation (CEM Discover). The structures of the all compounds were elucidated with the aid of elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR and Mass spectral data. Nickel nanoparticles can be recovered and reused five times without loss of their efficiency. Short reaction time, high yield of products and simple workup procedure, solvent-free conditions and reusability of the catalyst are the superior features of this protocol.
