Abstract This paper introduces an energy conversion inspired vibration control methodology and presents a representative prototype of tunable bi-stable energy converters. This work is concerned on improving the vibration absorption and energy conversion performance of tunable bi-stable clustered energy conversion inspired dynamic vibration absorbers (EC-DVAs). The deterministic parametric analysis of the energy transfer performance of clustered EC-DVAs is conducted. Firstly, nonlinear vibration behaviors including transient energy transfer and snap-through motions are studied, and then effects of EC-DVA number on vibration control is investigated. Furthermore, the optimal computation based on adjusting the length ratio (namely bi-stable potential barrier height) is developed to obtain the maximum energy conversion efficiency of clustered EC-DVAs and the minimum residual kinetic energy of the primary system considering different number of clustered EC-DVAs. Moreover, the optimal calculation based on optimal EC-DVA number is also developed to achieve the most excellent vibration absorption and energy conversion performance. Finally, the optimal calculation based on optimal mass ratio is conducted. Numerical simulations show that when the total mass ratio is constant the snap-through motions of each EC-DVA depend remarkably on EC-DVA number; the energy conversion efficiency and residual kinetic energy after dynamic length ratio optimization is independent on ambient input energy and EC-DVA number; The energy conversion efficiency and vibration absorption performance based on optimal EC-DVA number maintain high efficiency and stable when the ambient input energy or the potential energy of clustered EC-DVAs varies. The optimal mass ratio is large when the system’s potential barrier is too large and the ambient input energy is small. Therefore, the presented tunable bi-stable system of clustered EC-DVAs with appropriate bi-stable potential function and proposed optimization strategies is a potential alternative for vibration control of mechanical components exposed to varying impulses.

Abstract A new hybrid type of the Tuned Mass Damper (HTMD), which consists of a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) fixed on the top of a traditional Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), is developed for vibration control of an offshore platform. The results obtained from the parametric investigation show that the mass ratio between TLCD and TMD significantly affects the HTMD's performance. To assess the effectiveness and robustness of HTMD, extensive comparisons are made between an optimized HTMD and an optimum TMD with the same weight as the HTMD. The numerical computations indicate that the proposed HTMD offers a higher level of effectiveness in suppressing structural vibrations compared with a traditional TMD. However, the optimum HTMD is not robust in resisting the variation of the structural stiffness.

Modern optimal control theory is used to design passive dynamic absorbers to minimize the transient vibrations of thin plates. In addition to spring and damping constants, the absorber locations on the plate are optimized. If dynamic plate loads excite certain modes of vibration, the technique can be used to select parameters such that damping of these modes will be emphasized. The numerical example used to discuss the characteristics of the optimal designs concerns a uniform rectangular plate which is simply supported at its edges, but the technique applies in all cases where the vibration can be expressed as a sum of terms in orthogonal modes of vibration.

This paper is concerned with the active vibration control of a hanged rectangular plate partially submerged into a fluid by using piezoelectric sensors and actuators bonded to the plate. A dynamic model for the plate is derived by using the Rayleigh-Ritz method and the fluid effect is modeled by the virtual mass increase that is obtained by solving the Laplace equation. The natural vibration characteristics of the plate in air obtained theoretically are in good agreement with the experimental results. The changes in natural frequencies due to the presence of fluid were measured and compared to the theoretical predictions. Experimental results show that the theoretical predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results. The natural vibration characteristics of the plate both in air and in water are used for the active vibration control design. In this study, the multi-input and multi-output positive position feedback controller was designed based on the natural vibration characteristics and implemented by using a digital controller. Experimental results show that the vibration of the hanged rectangular plate both in air and partially submerged into a fluid can be successfully suppressed by using piezoelectric sensors and actuators.

Multiplexing the dynamic vibration absorber (DVA) has tried for improving the vibration absorption efficiency of the dynamic vibration absorber, and because there are several tuning vibration frequencies in the multi-mass dynamic vibration absorber system, the vibration absorption efficiency is more excellent than a conventional single-mass dynamic vibration absorber when they are in the same total mass ratio. In this paper, a two-series-mass dynamic vibration absorber was proposed, optimal parameters of the two-series-mass dynamic vibration absorber have been calculated and vibration absorption is analyzed with the simulation and experiment. The results show that the two-series-mss dynamic vibration absorber can improve vibration absorption, in the same total mass ratio, by about 20% above that of a conventional single-mass dynamic vibration absorber. Based on the above optimal results, the two-series-mass dynamic vibration was used for vibration control on high building, and the practical measure result shows its effectiveness.
