Abstract A new hybrid type of the Tuned Mass Damper (HTMD), which consists of a Tuned Liquid Column Damper (TLCD) fixed on the top of a traditional Tuned Mass Damper (TMD), is developed for vibration control of an offshore platform. The results obtained from the parametric investigation show that the mass ratio between TLCD and TMD significantly affects the HTMD's performance. To assess the effectiveness and robustness of HTMD, extensive comparisons are made between an optimized HTMD and an optimum TMD with the same weight as the HTMD. The numerical computations indicate that the proposed HTMD offers a higher level of effectiveness in suppressing structural vibrations compared with a traditional TMD. However, the optimum HTMD is not robust in resisting the variation of the structural stiffness.

The paper considers the problems and the methods of spectral analysis of elastic structural systems. The presented consideration focuses on the translation-invariant spectral formulations. Some periodic representations and the spectral decomposition are derived. In the context of general analysis of translation-invariant systems, the particular problems of structural vibration and stability are solved in analytical form.

This paper presents a robust nonlinear control scheme with time-varying output constraint for the electro-hydraulic force control system (EHFCS). Two typical double-rod symmetrical hydraulic cylinders are employed to simulate force environments in the EHFCS. Therefore, in order to improve the performance of the EHFCS, firstly, the model of the EHFCS is established with taking external disturbances, parameter uncertainties as well as structural vibrations into consideration. Secondly, in order to estimate external disturbances, parameter uncertainties and structural vibrations in the EHFCS and compensate them in the following robust controller design, two disturbance observers (DOs) are designed according to the nonlinear system model. Thirdly, with two estimation values from two DOs, a time-varying constraint-based robust controller (TVCRC) is presented in detail. Moreover, the stability of the proposed controller is analyzed by defining a proper Lyapunov functions. Finally, in order to validate the performance of the proposed controller, a series of simulation studies are conducted using the MATLAB/Simulink software. These simulation results give a fine proof of the efficiency of the proposed controller. What’s more, an experimental setup of the EHFCS is established to further validate the performance. Comparative experimental results show that the proposed controller exhibits better performance than the TVCRC without two DOs and a conventional proportional integral (PI) controller.

Abstract Scouring around bridge foundations is one of the main factors causing structural damage of bridges. Traditional scour monitoring techniques generally require a large number of sensing devices set up underwater, which is difficult to be implemented for actual bridges. To address this issue, scour monitoring technology based on structural vibrations is paid attention gradually, because this technique can work well with less equipment and can be free from the influence of the submerged environment. This study presents a systematic summary and analysis of the selection of scour indicators, sensor deployment principles and other related research involved in scour monitoring technology based on structural vibration. On this basis, the research status of the bridge scour monitoring method based on vehicle excitation is further summarized. Finally, the prospects for the application of vibration-based bridge foundation scour monitoring technology are presented, discussing the technologies that are currently missing and urgently needed for this monitoring method and the challenges faced today.

A smart exciter coupled to cabin panels can be used as a new type of loudspeaker for emergency announcements in the aircraft cabin. The same device can also be used as a semi-active vibration control system which is effective in reducing the amplitude of structural vibration. The objective of this paper is to investigate the potential of vibration reduction using a smart exciter in combination with an optimized resistive-inductive shunt circuit, which serves as an absorbing network. First, the vibration reduction effect has been analyzed numerically using a simulation framework realized with COMSOL and MATLAB/Simulink. In a second step, the reduction effect of the smart exciter together with a resistive-inductive shunt circuit, which is produced by the Center of Applied Aeronautical Research (Zentrum für Angewandte Luftfahrtforschung GmbH, Hamburg, Germany), has been investigated experimentally. The results presented here prove that the smart exciter together with a resistive-inductive shunt can be highly effective in reducing structural vibrations.

Nowadays, engineers are widely using accelerometers to record the vibration of structures for structural verification purposes. The main obstacle for using these data acquisition systems is their high cost, which limits its use to unique structures with a relatively high structural health monitoring budget. In this paper, a Cost Hyper-Efficient Arduino Product (CHEAP) has been developed to accurately measure structural accelerations. CHEAP is a system that is composed of five low-cost accelerometers that are connected to an Arduino microcontroller as their data acquisition system. Test results show that CHEAP not only has a significantly lower price (14 times cheaper in the worst-case scenario) compared with other systems used for comparison but also shows better accuracy on low frequencies for low acceleration amplitudes. Moreover, the final output results of Fast Fourier Transformation (FFT) assessments showed a better observable resolution for CHEAP than the studied control systems.

Digital Image Correlation (DIC) is an image-based method for measuring displacement and/or stain on the surface of a structure. When coupled with a stereo pair of highspeed cameras, DIC can also capture three-dimensional dynamic deformation of a structure under vibratory loading. However, high frequency and small amplitude displacement typically associated with structural vibrations mean that extra care is required during measurement and data processing. It becomes more challenging when thermal disturbances are present in the optical path, for example from a heated air flow, which introduces extraneous noise due to disturbances in the refractive index. In the present study, a simple composite plate was vibrated under a shaker excitation and stereo DIC measurements were performed. The obtained vibratory displacement results were compared against accelerometers and a laser Doppler vibrometer. Heated air flow was introduced in front of the plate to observe the effects of thermal disturbances on the DIC measurements. Although the contributions from the thermal disturbances were clearly visible in the DIC displacement data, it was shown that the vibratory deflections of the structure could still be extracted by post processing of the DIC data.
