In May 2010, the release of the iPad in Australia brought a whole new dimension to learning. This chapter presents the preliminary findings of a pilot study conducted at a large distance education university designed to explore the use of the iPad as a tool for learning from three perspectives. The first is the use of the iPad from a lecturer’s point of view, outlining how it can be used to enhance the task of teaching in distance education. The second is from a student’s point of view, exploring how the iPad can assist in distance education study. The third examines the iPad from an insider perspective, reviewing the variety of apps available including those for social networking. The overall impression is that the iPad has great potential as a tool for learning but it will not necessarily reduce the need for desktop or laptop computers.

Abstract The aim of this pilot study is a preliminary evaluation of previous models / modalities of online teaching at the Faculty of Medical Sciences in Serbia and to examine the attitudes of students and academic staff about education during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their previous experiences. The research was designed as an observational qualitative epidemiological study which was conducted on a population of students and academics staff at the Faculty of biomedical sciences, University of Kragujevac during the pandemic of SARS-CoV-2 infection in Serbia. The first phase is a pilot study which included 332 participants performed between December 2020 and January 2021. The pilot study questionnaire is formed for the purposes of the research and consists of 17 closed-ended questions with graduated answers. Students and academic staff completed the questionnaire through an online learning platform in all environments and from all electronic devices. The importance of this study is reflected in the fact that it provides detailed and valid data that can serve the purpose of improving the efficiency of online teaching at the faculties of medical sciences in Serbia In general, the results of our study indicate that in addition to great inexperience, both students and academic staff cope well during online education and the changed environment and learning conditions despite all the difficulties.

Approximately 80% of children with asthma have coexisting allergic rhinitis. The accurate recognition and assessment of asthma and rhinitis symptoms is an integral component of guideline-based treatment for both conditions. This article describes the development and preliminary evaluation of a novel paradigm for testing the accuracy of children's assessment of their upper airway (rhinitis) symptoms. This work is guided by our previous research showing the clinical efficacy of tools to evaluate children's perceptual accuracy of asthma symptoms and linking accurate asthma symptom perception to decreased asthma morbidity (Fritz G, et al., Ethnic differences in perception of lung function: A factor in pediatric asthma disparities? Am J Respir Crit Care Med 182:12–18, 2010; Klein RB, et al., The Asthma Risk Grid: Clinical interpretation of symptom perception, Allergy Asthma Proc 251–256, 2004). The pilot study tests a paradigm that allows for the examination of the correspondence of children's assessment of their upper airway functioning with actual values of upper airway flow through the use of a portable, handheld nasal peak flowmeter. Nine children with persistent asthma were evaluated over a 4-week period. The article describes the rhinitis perceptual accuracy paradigm and reviews the results of a pilot study, showing a large proportion of inaccurate rhinitis symptoms “guesses” by the sample of children with persistent asthma. Patterns of inaccuracy, rhinitis control, and asthma morbidity are also described. Directions for future work are reviewed. The development of clinical tools to evaluate children's accuracy of rhinitis symptoms are needed, given the central role of the self-assessment of symptoms in guideline-based care. Accurate perception of the severity of rhinitis symptoms may enhance rhinitis control, lessen the burden of asthma, and prevent unnecessary emergency use among this high-risk group of children.

It is becoming increasingly evident that informal psychotherapy plays a significant part in the coping strategies people use to alleviate personal distress. A form of this “social support” was evaluated in a pilot study in which ex-clients served as therapists for informal community groups made up of people experiencing clinical anxiety. Three major questions were addressed: what are the training effects of a short workshop on the ex-clients' social support skills?; can the trained ex-clients help people suffering with clinical anxiety?; and finally, does this involvement have an adverse effect on the psychological well being of these lay therapists. Between and within group analyses with multiple measures indicated that the workshop was successful in all three targeted areas. Implications are drawn for the pattern of formal psychotherapy services.

PESTICIDES APPLIED IN EUCALYPTUS AND COCONUT PALM PLANTATIONS: PRELIMINARY ANALYSIS Abstract A preliminary evaluation of pesticides applied in eucalyptus and coconut crops in Northeast Brazil was carried out on the contamination risk of ground and superficial waters. For such, it was used the criteria suggested by the United States Environmental Protect Agency (EPA) and the “Groundwater Ubiquity Score” (GUS), and the Goss method. The pesticides Tetradiphon, Triclorphon, α-Endosulfan, β-Endosulfan, Endosulfan Sulfate and Glyphosate showed considerable potential contamination of waters, which need monitoring. The other pesticides researched didn’t show risk of contamination by following the criteria evaluated in this study.
