A clean process has been developed for the synthesis of 2-adamantylphenol derivatives through adamantylation of substituted phenols with adamantanols catalyzed by commercially available and recyclable ion-exchange sulfonic acid resin in acetic acid. The sole byproduct of the adamantylation reaction, namely water, could be converted into the solvent acetic acid by addition of a slight excess of acetic anhydride during the work-up procedure, making the process waste-free except for regeneration of the ion-exchange resin, and facilitating the recycling of the resin catalyst. The ion-exchange sulfonic acid resin catalyst could be readily recycled by filtration and directly reused at least ten times without a significant loss of activity. The key intermediate of adapalene, 2-(1-adamantyl)-4-bromophenol, could be produced by means of this waste-free process.

In this work, the ion exchange resin catalyst named D072 were used in the hydrolysis of a methyl acrylate to acrylic acid and methanol firstlyand chemical equilibrium would be achieved during the process of the reversible reaction system. The influences of parameters such as dosage of catalyst, initial reactants molar ratio and reaction temperature were investigated. Meanwhile, the reusability of cation-exchange resin was studied, and no phenomenon of deactivation was found with using of reused catalyst. Moreover, the experimental data were analyzed by the pseudo-homogeneous (PH) model and the hydrolysis dynamics equation of methyl acrylate was obtained and found that the activation energy of the reaction was 118.37 KJ/mol in the presence of D072. Based on the result, high energy would be needed to the hydrolysis of methyl acrylate in using D072 resin as catalyst.

Dehydrohalogenation of a mixture of glycerol 1,3- and 2,3-dihalohydrins by a strong basic ion-exchange resin (IRA 440 and A 26) at room temperature in an organic medium quantitatively leads to the corresponding epihalohydrin (1a; X = Cl), and (1b; X = Br) in a very short reaction time. Hydrolysis of the epihalohydrin does not occur under these conditions.
