Background: Skin diseases are quite common among migrant workers, yet little research has been done to determine their prevalence and risk factors. Poor living conditions, over-crowding, low standards of personal hygiene and environmental sanitation make them even more vulnerable. The objective of the study was to assess the prevalence and pattern of skin infections among migrant labourers and their relationship with selected socio-demographic factors.Methods: A hospital based cross sectional study was carried out among 300 temporary migrants visiting dermatology OPD of A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences teaching hospital. The duration of study was two months. All patients were diagnosed clinically by qualified dermatologists and supported by relevant investigations.Results: Most of the migrants were males (62%) while remaining (38%) were females. Majority of the migrants (42.3%) belonged to 20-40 years age group. Infectious skin diseases were found among 64.3% of the study subjects while 34.7% of them had non-infectious skin diseases. The lesions were mainly over head and neck (23.3%) followed by abdomen (23%), upper limbs (21.3%) and lower limbs (21.3%).Conclusions: The study revealed a high prevalence of infectious skin diseases among the migrant workers.

Abstract: Non-infectious skin disease is a skin disease that is not caused by pathogenic bacteria or by transmission. Many non-infectious skin diseases showed different manifestations in infants and children. This study aimed to obtain the patterns of non-infectious skin diseases in children at Dermatovenorology Department Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou General Hospital period 2009-2011. This was a retrospective study. Data of the annual cases, gender, and ages were obtained from the medical records. From a total of 595 patients in 2009-2011 there were 323 (54.29%) children with non-infectious skin diseases, females (167 patients, 51.70%) were more frequent than males, and most commonly in the age group of 5 to 14 years (59.13%). Conclusion: Non-infectious skin diseases were still common in Dermatovenorology Department Prof. Dr. R. D. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pola penyakit kulit non-infeksi pada anak di Poliklinik Kulit dan Kelamin RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado periode 2009-2011.Metode Penelitian dilakukan secara retrospektif pada pasien anak dengan penyakit kulit non-infeksi yang datang ke Poliklinik Kulit dan Kelamin pada tahun 2009-2011. Data diperoleh dari rekam medik mengenai jumlah kasus pertahun, jenis kelamin, dan umur. Hasil penelitian memperlihatkan dari sejumlah 595 kunjungan pada tahun 2009-2011 terdapat 323 (54,29%) pasien anak dengan penyakit kulit non-infeksi, distribusi jenis kelamin memperlihatkan perempuan yang terbanyak 167 (51,70%), dan ter banyak pada kelompok umur 5-14 tahun (59,13%). Simpulan: Penyakit kulit non-infeksi masih sering dijumpai pada pasien anak di RSUP Prof. Dr. R. D. Kandou Manado.Kata kunci: penyakit kulit non-infeksi, anak

Background: Dermatophytosis is the most prevalent fungal infection found in cats and one of the most serious infectious skin diseases that affect this species. Dermatophytosis can be endemic in cats, particularly in poor environments, and it is difficult to eradicate in such cases. Purpose: The aim of this research was to determine the macroscopic and microscopic identification of various types of dermatophytes present in stray cats. Methods: The research was designed as a laboratory-based study. The sample was determined through physical examination of stray cats infected with fungi and was selected based on the infection site (nail, hair, and skin) of infected cats. A total of 125 samples were collected from infected stray cats through skin scraping, haircutting, and nail clipping. The collected samples were then cultured in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar (SDA) medium and incubated for two weeks at 26°C. Following incubation, fungi were stained using Lacto-phenol Cotton Blue (LPCB) for microscopic identification. Results: The identification showed that Trichophyton spp. is the most common isolated fungal species on the hair, nails, and skin of stray cats. This is followed by Aspergillus spp. and Microsporum spp. The least common dermatophytes include Curvularia spp., Absidia spp., Epidermophyton spp., Neosytallidium spp., Alternaria spp., Scopulariopsis spp., Mucor spp., and Penicillium spp. Conclusion: The research focussed exclusively on stray cats with clinical evidence of mycotic lesions and confirmed the role of stray cats in transmitting dermatophytosis through their hair, nails, and skin. The prevalence of dermatophytes on stray cats was identified in the Selangor region.
