Carbapenem resistance has been encountered globally with poor outcome of infected patients. NDM-1 (New Delhi metallo-beta-lactamase) gene containing organisms have emerged and are now spreading in all continents. This is the first report of Iraqi patients referred to Lebanon from whom carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae were recovered. The genes involved in carbapenem resistance were bla-OXA-48   and the novel NDM-1. This report highlights the alarming introduction of such resistance among Enterobacteriaecae to this country.

ABSTRACT We sequenced a carbapenem-resistant Shewanella putrefaciens isolate cultured from the sink handle of a Pakistan hospital room. Assembly annotation indicates that the isolate has a chromosomal bla OXA-436 carbapenemase and a plasmid-borne bla NDM-1 gene. To our knowledge, this is the first report of a Shewanella species harboring bla NDM.

ABSTRACT The spread of mcr-1-encoding plasmids into carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae raises concerns about the emergence of untreatable bacteria. We report the acquisition of mcr-1 in a carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli strain after a 3-week course of colistin in a patient repatriated to France from Portugal. Whole-genome sequencing revealed that the Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase-producing E. coli strain acquired two plasmids, an IncL OXA-48-encoding plasmid and an IncX4 mcr-1-encoding plasmid. This is the first report of mcr-1 in carbapenemase-encoding bacteria in France.

ABSTRACTCeftazidime-avibactam is the first antimicrobial approved by the U.S. FDA for the treatment of carbapenem-resistantEnterobacteriaceae. Avibactam, a non-β-lactam β-lactamase inhibitor, inactivates class A serine carbapenemases, includingKlebsiella pneumoniaecarbapenemase (KPC). We report a KPC-producingK. pneumoniaeisolate resistant to ceftazidime-avibactam (MIC, 32/4 μg/ml) from a patient with no prior treatment with ceftazidime-avibactam.

ABSTRACTA carbapenem-resistantAcinetobacter baumanniiclinical isolate belonging to European clone II and sequence type 2 was recovered from a patient in the Son Espases hospital in Mallorca, Spain. Genetic analysis showed the presence of theblaOXA-23gene in association with the widely disseminated transposon Tn2006. This is the first reported identification ofA. baumanniicarryingblaOXA-23in Spain.
