E-learning applications are becoming commonplace in most higher education institutions, and some institutions have implemented open source applications such as course management systems and electronic portfolios. These e-learning applications initiatives are the first step to moving away from proprietary software such as Blackboard and WEBCT toward open source. With open source, higher education institutions can easily and freely audit their systems. This chapter presents evaluation criteria that was used by a higher education institution to evaluate an open source e-learning system.

This paper discusses the major features of e-learning systems used by higher education institutions. A short historical overview provides the necessary perspectives and introduces the subjects of distance learning and e-learning. Major system features are further analyzed and concepts of content personalization and system standardization are given as technical constructs. Elements of further possibilities are displayed at the conclusion of this paper.

BACKGROUND: In the last few months, e-learning witnessed a considerable demand due to the Covid-19 pandemic that made it the pragmatic solution for all Higher Education Institutions (HEI). Currently, all public and private universities relying on technology to make education continues with few interruptions. The migration of HEI into the virtual education model experienced several challenges in delivering rich education content to educators and learners. OBJECTIVE: Critical Success Factors (CSFs) enabled many universities to transform efficiently into the virtual environment. Before this transition, universities should carefully consider the key challenges and the CSFs to achieve successful migration to the virtual environment. E-learning is not a substitute anymore, it is gradually becoming a de-facto technology transformation in the current exceptional situation. This paradigm shift contributes to the success of education continuity in higher education settings. METHODOLOGY: A survey instrument was distributed to 500 students effectively using e-learning systems. Out of which only 330 were completed and used in the analysis which determined 66%as the overall response rate. RESULTS: The results of the study indicate a positive and significant relationship between the 13 CSFs and the e-learning systems usage, and that also indicates a notable impact of the CSFs on the e-learning systems usage. CONCLUSION: The outcome of this research identifies the top 13 CSFs that contribute to delivering successful e-learning systems usage. The top 13 CSFs are positively and significantly correlated with e-learning systems usage.

This paper explains the concept of gamification, lists the current models according to which educational e-courses can be designed, and proposes a conceptual eRIOOS model aimed at higher education. The aim of the research as well as the purpose of creating a conceptual model of gamification is to standardize the elements of computer games that can be used in educational e-courses at higher education institutions. In the preparation of this research, the emphasis was placed on the invention and analysis of professional and scientific literature for creating a conceptual model. The model contains a logical representation of two levels of complexity. Three separate e-courses have been created in different courses within the two University institutions, which serve as a tool to check the correctness of the conceptual eRIOOS model. The result of the research is a confirmed conceptual model that is suitable for creating Moodle e-courses of IT teaching orientation in higher education institutions.

<p>The concept of e-learning offers a number of benefits, however, the effective adoption of e-learning systems at HEIs is a relatively new concept and thus a challenging task. The comprehensive review of extant literature on the topic of adoption of e-learning systems at HEIs is provided. Using PRISMA search technique, relevant articles published from 2005 to 2020 owing to the widespread adoption of e-learning since 2005 were selected. The paper identifies and puts forward the level of compatibility and readiness of students and teachers in adopting e-learning, factors that motivate and hinder the adoption of e-learning respectively, benefits of adopting an e-learning system, and the strategies for the effective implementation of e-learning at the higher education institutions. In this realm of COVID-19 and e-learning, this paper also envisage different strategies, policies and recommendations for implementing e-learning in an effective way at HEIs.</p>
