Moisture content is a quality issue raised by recycling plants in the acceptance of paper and cardboard coming from waste streams. The current way to measure this parameter is by the oven drying method, which is a slow and invasive process, costing time and resources for the recyclers to do this type of quality control. An alternative to such a measurement technique is the use of plate-form devices which indirectly measure the moisture content using the dielectric properties of water and paper. This study has tested this method and developed a representative equation for the use of devices with these properties in the Portuguese market. For that, 48 wastepaper and cardboard bales were tested with both the traditional (oven drying) method and a commercial device equipped with dielectric technology. An equation that fits the studied reality (R2 = 0.76) was achieved, and possible problems regarding the use of this device were tested. The results showed that this type of device could be used as a time- and cost-saving, non-destructive and reliable method in the quality control of wastepaper and cardboard bales.

Development of industry demands better performance of equipments and devices than ever. The property of material used to produce the equipments is the precondition to ensure the quality. As equipments are usually required to be integral during the quality inspection, non-destructive testing (NDT) plays an increasingly import role in modern industry quality control. Different NDT methods are introduced and analyzed. The mechanism of ultrasonic exciting is described. After the ultrasonic is excited, the vibration signal can be detected by transducer or optical method which are then illustrated. In the section of development of laser ultrasonic technology, contributions made by various researchers in theoretic development, experiment, simulation and application are introduced and the corresponding content of the researches as well. The conclusion and the outlook of laser ultrasonic technique is made at the last.

Milk is a product that requires quality control at all stages of production: from the dairy farm, processing at the dairy plant to finished products. Milk is a complex multiphase polydisperse system, whose components not only determine the quality and price of raw milk, but also reflect the physiological state of the herd. Today’s production volumes and rates require simple, fast, cost-effective, and accurate analytical methods, and most manufacturers want to move away from methods that use reagents that increase analysis time and move to rapid analysis methods. The review presents methods for the rapid determination of the main components of milk, examines their advantages and disadvantages. Optical spectroscopy is a fast, non-destructive, precise, and reliable tool for determination of the main constituents and common adulterants in milk. While mid-infrared spectroscopy is a well-established off-line laboratory technique for the routine quality control of milk, near-infrared technologies provide relatively low-cost and robust solutions suitable for on-site and in-line applications on milking farms and dairy production facilities. Other techniques, discussed in this review, including Raman spectroscopy, atomic spectroscopy, molecular fluorescence spectroscopy, are also used for milk analysis but much less extensively. Acoustic methods are also suitable for non-destructive on-line analysis of milk. Acoustic characterization can provide information on fat content, particle size distribution of fat and proteins, changes in the biophysical properties of milk over time, the content of specific proteins and pollutants. The basic principles of ultrasonic techniques, including transmission, pulse-echo, interferometer, and microbalance approaches, are briefly described and milk parameters measured with their help, including frequency ranges and measurement accuracy, are given.

A comparative study of the mechanical properties of the extruded and flattened nanostructured composites Al-C60 has been made using two different methods of destructive and non-destructive testing: tensile and compression macro-tests and sub-micron range sclerometry (scratch test). Direct correlation was found between the dominant types of deformation during scratching and the type of “stress-strain” dependencies. The results are useful for understanding the extrusion process and quality control at different load scale.
