Ni-based super alloys are used in a wide field of applications like chemical, nuclear, petrochemical and furnace industries, where extreme temperatures, mechanical stresses and corrosive environments are encountered. The paper presents the failure analysis of an assembly used in a petrochemical plant after 40000 functioning hours at high temperatures. The assembly is composed of a catalyst tube made of KHR 35CT and a weldolet made of INCOLOY 800HT welded by GTAW process using INCONNEL 82 as filler material. SEM and EDX analysis were carried out and it was found that the fracture occurred by the weldolet detachment, following the fusion zone. The fracture surface presents grain boundaries precipitations and no major plastic deformations.
