The European brown shrimp Crangon crangon is an abundant and commercially important species in the North Sea. Currently, there is interest in landing live shrimp to provide fresh animals for a growing market in live brown shrimp. During 4 survival studies between 2014 and 2016, shrimp were collected from commercial trawlers and maintained alive in off-shore facilities. From Day 1 onwards, a minority of shrimp (~2.24%) developed a white discoloration of the abdominal muscles and a depigmentation of the distal part of the abdomen, along with paralysis of the affected tissues and appendages. As the symptoms progressed, a circumferential blackish delineation appeared, creating a distinct boundary between healthy and necrotic tissue. Affected shrimp survived up to 3 wk, although in several animals the distal part of the tail was completely lost. Histological and electron microscopical examination confirmed the myonecrosis. A secondary bacterial invasion of the necrotic muscle was observed in some animals. RT-PCR for infectious myonecrosis virus was negative. The condition appears not to be contagious, based on the feeding of healthy shrimp with necrotic tissue of affected shrimp. Based on these observations, a mechanical cause inflicted during the catching process is proposed.

This study aimed to identify the effects of different sieve mesh-sizes on processing time, the number of species retained, diversity measures and multivariate community analysis in the North Sea. Samples were collected at 63 sites throughout the North Sea and washed through two successive sieves, 10-mm and 5-mm mesh respectively.  Processing time for whole samples (5- and 10-mm fraction) averaged 91± 25 min compared with 55±16 min for the 10-mm mesh fraction. Altogether 40% of free-living species and 9% of attached species were recorded exclusively in the 5-mm fraction. The majority of these species were rare. Spatial gradients of species diversity and community structure were identical, independent of the mesh-size used. Multivariate community analysis showed no significant difference between descriptions of community structure based on fauna from 10-mm or 5-mm mesh.  The use of coarser sieving mesh would save time and money, if the aims of an epibenthic survey were to describe broad patterns of community structure and relative diversity. It would be possible to process approximately 50% more samples, if the time saved with 10-mm mesh were allocated to additional sampling. However, if information on single species is required, then sorting with the finer sieve mesh will yield crucial information. It was decided to employ a 5-mm mesh for epibenthic monitoring of the North Sea.

Abstract The North Sea brown shrimp fishery is currently regulated neither with quotas nor with effort management. The current paradigm of non-management was based on an analysis of the total predation by cod and whiting in relation to commercial catches for the period 1970–1995 and the estimated total dominance of natural mortality. However, since this period, the North Sea ecosystem has undergone pronounced changes with overfishing and climate change causing a substantial decline in predator stocks, namely cod and whiting. In addition, both predators have shifted their range of distribution causing a reduced overlap with brown shrimp. Here, we extend the previous assessment of brown shrimp predation for the years 1996–2011 using updated stock assessment and predator distribution data. For the first time, predation estimates are used together with commercial landings to partition independent estimates of total mortality into fishing and predation mortality. We demonstrate that the decline of key predators of brown shrimp in combination with a shift in the distributional range of the predators has caused a new situation, in which the fishery has become the main mortality source of adult brown shrimp (>50 mm). Average landings since 2000 have been ∼40% higher than in the 1980s and 1990s, indicating that humans have at least partly taken over the share previously taken by juvenile whiting and cod. We discuss that this situation is likely to continue, because three marine mammal species have built up a combined population of over 80 000 individuals, which hunt for potential brown shrimp predators mainly in the distribution area of brown shrimp. The application of two yield-per-recruit models of different complexity indicates potential growth overfishing of brown shrimp and reopens the discussion of management.
