The effects of reinforcing Poly ether etherketone (PEEK) with alumina nanofiber have been studied. The nano-composites were prepared by first dispersing the fibre in solvent and then undertaking the synthesis of PEEK. Nanocomposite materials with 1wt.%, 2.5wt.% and 5wt.% of alumina nanofiber have been prepared successfully by dispersing the alumina nanofiber in Sulfolane as solvent and upon sonication for 30 minutes. Transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron micrographs indicated excellent dispersion and interactions between PEEK matrixes with the added alumina nanofibers. Differential scanning calorimeter shows changes in melting and crystallization point and degree of crystallinity for 1wt.% nanocomposites. The result also indicated that alumina nanofiber serves as nucleating agents in PEEK nanocomposites. The X-ray diffractogram data indicated that the crystallinity of the PEEK nanocomposites was highest for 1wt.% alumina nanofiber. The thermogravimetry analysis, shows that thermal stability for alumina nanofiber/PEEK nano-composites was enhanced compared to that of the pure PEEK.

The acidification and intercalation of illite containing clays were studied for potential use as fillers for sulphonated poly (ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) composite membrane preparation and future proton exchange membrane fuel cells application. The acidification and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) intercalation of illite clays have been studied by powder X-ray diffractometry, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and thermogravimetric analysis. SPEEK composite membranes were made with 1, 3 and 5% purified, acidified, DMSO intercalated clay fillers. SPEEK/clay composite membranes were characterized by proton conductivity, water uptake, and mechanical strength.

ABSTRACTThe wet-state-consolidation process was used to fabricate bulk rigid-rod/thermoplastic molecular composites of poly(p-phenylene benzobisthiazole) and poly(ether ether ketone). The composites were molded into bar-shaped specimens. The morphology of those specimens was studied throughout the entire process using X-ray scattering and scanning electron microscopy to correlate processing conditions and properties. The mechanical properties of the bulk composites were comparable to those of other rigid-rod/thermoplastic molecular composite systems.
