Abstract Background Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most common valvular heart disease. Bisphosphonates are stable analogs of pyrophosphates and commonly prescribed in the treatment of osteoporosis. The effects of bisphosphonate treatment on CAVD are not clearly known and there are inconsistent results. Similarly, the effect of calcium supplementation on CAVD remains controversial. Purpose The aim of this study was to assess the effects of bisphosphonate therapy on the normal aortic valve and vitamin D induced in vivo rabbit aortic stenosis (AS) model. Methods The impact of calcium supplementation on the rabbit AS model was also evaluated. A total of 30 New Zealand white rabbits were divided into five equal groups: no treatment (Group I); 25,000 IU/day vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) (Group II, rabbit AS model); 25,000 IU/day cholecalciferol plus 2500 mg/day calcium carbonate (Group III); 20 μg/kg/week intravenous alendronate (Group IV) and 25,000 IU/day cholecalciferol plus 2500 mg/day calcium carbonate plus 20μg/kg/week alendronate (Group V). Echocardiography was performed at baseline and after 12 weeks of treatment. The left ventricular mass index (LVMI), aortic valve area (AVA), transvalvular velocities and gradients were recorded. Radiologic and histopathologic examination was performed at the end of the 12th week. Control animals displayed no abnormalities of the aortic valve. Results There was no echocardiographic change in Group IV. In Groups II, III and V, there was a significant decrease in AVA and increases in transvalvular velocities and gradients. However, these stenotic changes were significantly prominent in Group V (p=0.001 for all, via repeated measures ANOVA). Moreover, LVMI was only increased in Group V (p<0.05). Calcification of aortic valvar complex was detected in 14 (46.7%) cases by radiologic imaging and 10 (33.3%) cases by histopathologic examination. Most frequent calcification was found in Group V (5 for each method, 83.3%). Agatston, volume and equivalent mass scores of calcific foci in Group V were significantly higher than other groups (p<0.05 for all). There was no significant difference between groups regarding with presence of osteoclasts in calcific foci. Conclusion Calcium supplementation has no effect on the in vivo rabbit AS model. Alendronate treatment aggravates the stenosis and increases the calcification in the rabbit AS model. Alendronate treatment has no effect on the normal valve in which there was no osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis. Based on these findings, in patients with CAVD, alendronate treatment should be given with regular echocardiographic follow-up or may not be preferred. Histologic examination was performed on uterine biopsy samples of irregular cystic masses noted during caesarean section of a 2-year-old female Boer goat. Histopathologic examination revealed multifocal erosions of the superficial epithelium and multifocal infiltration of the endometrium by widely scattered viable and degenerate neutrophils, lymphocytes, and plasma cells admixed with mild amounts of cellular debris and hemorrhage. The endometrium was markedly expanded by many irregular cystic and hyperplastic glands. This is the first case report of endometritis and cystic endometrial hyperplasia in a goat in North America.

Abstract Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, or histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis, is a self-limited condition, characterized by benign lymphadenopathy with associated fevers and systemic symptoms. It most commonly affects adults younger than 40 years of age and of Asian descent. Involved lymph nodes demonstrate paracortical areas of apoptotic necrosis with abundant karyorrhectic debris and a proliferation of histiocytes, plasmacytoid dendritic cells, and CD8+ T cells in the absence of neutrophils. Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease is thought to have 3 evolving phases: proliferative, necrotizing, and xanthomatous. The etiology is unknown, although viruses and autoimmune mechanisms have been proposed. No specific laboratory tests contribute to the diagnosis. Diagnosis requires histopathologic examination and exclusion of other factors by ancillary studies. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma and systemic lupus erythematosus should be ruled out before diagnosis of Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease, given the overlapped clinical and histologic features as well as the different therapeutic approaches. Treatment involves supportive measures, and the symptoms usually resolve spontaneously within 4 months.

This report describes a dog model of multifocal choroiditis with serous retinal detachment after carotid injection of Streptococcus mutans. The fundus lesions occurred mainly in the tapetal area of the retina, and, on histopathologic examination, microabscesses in the choroid and subretinal space were observed.

Kata kunci: Schwannoma aurikula, ekstirpasi, insisi retroaurikula ABSTRACTBackground: Schwannoma is a Schwann cells benign tumors. The incidence of auricularSchwannoma is rare. The most common is vestibular Schwannoma. Treatment of choice is completesurgical excision, and recurrence is rare. Purpose: Reporting a rase case of an auricular Schwannomathat spread to external auditory canals. Case: A three years old boy presented with a swelling in the leftauricular for 6 months, which was progressively increasing and spread into external auditory canals. An excisional biopsy via postauricular was performed under general anesthesia. The mass was totallyremoved. Diagnosis was reported to be Schwannoma by histopathologic examination. There was no signsof local recurrence during a 6 months of follow-up period. Method: Search literatures for evidence found5 case report journals were relevant to our clinical question. Result: From the 5 journals, all of themopted to do total excisional removal, 2 cases by transmeatal incision, 2 cases by postauricular incision, and 1 case by direct incision of the auricular mass. Conclusion: Auricular schwannoma is a rare case.Previous case reports showed no sufficient relevance on the age and sex tendency to the occurence ofauricular Schwannoma. A complete extirpation can prevent recurrence.Key words: Auricular schwannoma, extirpation, postroauricular incision

Appropriate aseptic technique is a crucial component of rodent survival surgery. Ease of technique, surgical space constraint, batch surgery, and cost are factors that may affect researcher compliance with appropriate aseptic technique. The first part of this study compared 3 antiseptic preparation agents with the standard triplicate application of povidone-iodine and alcohol. Euthanized mice (n = 40) were shaved on the dorsum, and culture swabs were taken for RODAC plating and bacterial identification. Shaved sites were prepared by using one of the 4 antiseptic preparation agents. Culture samples were obtained immediately and at 20 min after antiseptic preparation. In the 2nd part of the study, 8 mice (n = 2 per group) were prepared for a survival surgical procedure by using one of the 4 antiseptic preparation agents to evaluate whether the antiseptic preparation agents caused skin irritation or impaired healing. Results from this study indicated that all 3 of the antiseptic agents evaluated were equally effective at reducing bacterial populations immediately and at 20 min after preparation. Histopathologic examination of the incision sites revealed signs of normal healing without lesions adjacent to the incision site. We conclude that all 3 of the products evaluated are comparable to traditional povidone–iodine and alcohol as agents for aseptic preparation of surgical sites.
