High-quality all-carbon nanostructure graphdiyne (GDY) saturable absorber was successfully fabricated and saturable absorption properties in the 2 μm region were characterized using a commercial mode-locked laser as a pulsed source. The fabricated GDY was first used as an optical switcher in a passively Q-switched Ho laser. Under absorbed pump power of 2.4 W, the maximum average output power and shortest pulse width were 443 mW and 1.38 µs, at a repetition rate of 29.72 kHz. The results suggest that GDY nanomaterial is a promising candidate as an optical modulator for generation of short pulses in Ho-doped lasers at 2.1 μm.

Spherical gold colloidal nanoparticles were prepared used traditional liquid phase method and the corresponding nonlinear absorption properties were investigated by open aperture Z-scan technique using 8 ns laser pulses of 532 nm. The gold colloidal nanoparticles exhibited a transform from saturable absorption (SA) to reverse saturable absorption (RSA) at relatively higher irradiation intensities. The SA behavior presumably owes to the bleach of ground-state surface plasmon resonance (SPR) absorption, while the RSA might result from high excited-stated free carrier absorption.

ABSTRACTThe synthesis of transparent hybrid organic-inorganic coatings obtained from condensation between alkoxysilane containing grafted dyes (azo dyes or phthalocyanines) and metal alkoxides precursors has been performed. The Red 17 azo dye, known for its high second order polarisability, was bonded to the silicon oxide network following two procedures: a silylation reaction between Red 17 and triethoxysilane; a coupling reaction between Red 17 and 3-isocyanatopropyltriethoxysilane. Silicon phthalocyanines (known for their third order polarisability and inverse saturable absorption properties) were incorporated into the silicon oxide network by a silylation reaction. Phthalocyanine doped transparent hybrid organic-inorganic coatings were obtained from condensation between diethoxymethylsilane and zirconium propoxide precursors.

The optical nonlinear absorption properties in sputtering Indium nitride ( InN ) film were investigated under the excitations of nanosecond, picosecond and femtosecond pulsed lasers by open-aperture transmission Z-scan technique (TZ-scan). Under the condition of hν > Eg, the saturable absorption (SA) phenomena induced by one-photon transition were observed in both nanosecond and picosencond pulsed TZ-scan measurements. When 2hν > Eg > hν, the film presented SA due to the two-photon transition under the excitation of picosecond laser. However, at femtosecond 800 nm, the film showed the two-photon absorption (TPA) instead of SA, and the TPA coefficient tended to a saturable value as the excitation intensity increased. The results indicate that the InN film is a kind of good saturable absorber.
