Abstract In this study, the effects of sections added to multi-cell square tubes on crash performance are examined. Square, hexagonal and circular sections are added to multi-cell square tubes and their results are examined. Finite element analyses under axial loading are performed to examine the crash performance of the multi-cell tubes. Analyses show that by adding a section to the multi-cell square tubes. the crash behavior of the tubes is improved. According to the results, S5H multi-cell square tube reveals the best crash performance. The optimization of S5H is carried out by using genetic algorithms and radial basis functions. The S5H tube presents a good crashworthiness performance and could be used as an energy absorber.

In this paper, the effects of the fillers in the rubber-filled circular tubes are investigated during the inversion process of the tubes under the axial loading, experimentally. For this purpose, a comparison between the experimental results of the empty and rubber filled circular tubes was performed. The inversion tests were carried out on the rubber-filled and empty brazen circular tubes. A pair of die and punch was prepared as the fixtures. All the inversion tests are performed under quasi-static axial loading. The experimental results of the filled tubes show a considerable increase in the energy absorption and the axial force comparing with the empty tubes, during the tube inversion process. The filler material in the circular tubes was supplied from the wastage of the tire producer companies. This is one of the best applications of the tire wastage that has good environmental and economical advantages. The tire wastage filled-tubes are introduced as a good energy absorber that can be used in the energy absorption mechanisms such as automobile bumpers, crashing barriers of roadsides, and aerospace.

Steel plate-concrete shear walls (SPSW) are used as the containment in nuclear power stations. However, the influence of holes and axial loading on the behavior of steel plate-concrete shear walls is neglected in most studies. Thus, it is necessary to understand the seismic behavior of SPSW members with holes in order to avoid the potential risks for nuclear power stations. In this study, a series of specimens were tested by low-cycle reciprocal loading. The specimens were designed with different holes to simulate real members in nuclear power stations. A hysteretic curve of specimens was obtained from a low-cycle reciprocal test to discuss the seismic behavior of steel plate-concrete shear walls (SPSW). Moreover, effects of axial compression ratio, hole size, thickness of the steel plate, and hole position on the hysteretic performance of SPSW were analyzed. The horizontal ultimate bearing capacity of SPSW specimens was estimated using the norms of the Architecture Institute of Japan and the calculation method of Ono reduction rate. Results provide theoretical references for the design and application of SPSW with holes.

This paper reviewed the crashworthiness of foam-filled thin-walled structure subjected to oblique loading conditions. Crashworthiness is the most important part in designing a safety vehicle, so, the types of collisions, crashworthiness parameter and the modes of collapse of structural components are included in this part. Secondly, the energy absorber regarding the axial loading and oblique loading in terms of geometry parameters and materials of the previous research is reviewed. In addition, the manufacturing and properties of aluminium foams with the collapse behavior of foam-filled structures are studied to understand the performance and the relation under loading.
