A review of stabilization methods for DCMG with CPL, the role of bandwidth limits and droop control

DC microgrids (DCMGs) integrate and coordinate various DC distribution generation units including various renewable energy sources and battery storage systems, and have been used in satellites, the International Space Station, telecom power stations, computer power supplies, electric aircraft, and electric ships. However, the presence of constant power loads (CPLs) can cause instability in DCMGs. Thus, this paper reviews the stabilization techniques that can resolve instability caused by CPLs, as well as various parameters of CPLs, such as bandwidth, and the frequency of the CPLs that can stabilize the DCMGs. It also discusses recent trends and future work in finding stability limits using the parameters of CPLs. It should be useful for directing research towards appropriate mathematical and experimental approaches for the stability of DCMGs with CPLs.

A Novel Discrete Binary Gaining-Sharing knowledge-based Optimization Algorithm for the Travelling Counselling Problem for Utilization of Solar Energy

Climate Justice in Durban

This chapter situates itself in the climate justice discourse and unpacks the paradoxes in state and grassroots action. It argues that due to market-orientated and neo-liberal water and sanitation governance, the failure to take into account water and climate change governance as well as ecological and institutional economics resulted in climate change chaos. Due to this paralysis, communities failed to adapt to climate variability. The illogicalities and ambiguities in what the municipality says and does leaves local communities at the vagaries of nature and to deal with the resulting chaos albeit with some doing so in quite inspiring ways. The empirical data is collected through 120 interviews and four participatory action workshops conducted with civil society actors, government officials, academics, and communities of AmaQadi situated in North Central Durban, Umbumbulu in South Durban, Wood Glen and Zamani B in Durban Outer West, Ntuzuma G and Soweto in North Central Durban. The key finding is that the municipal Climate Change Protection Unit adopted a ‘climate-resilient' strategy on the one hand, but on the other, city electricity officials built power stations in flood plains, the Economic Development Unit promoted a shopping mall in a wetland, and eThekwini Water is introducing unpopular UD toilets to deal with water scarcity, without looking at externalities in wetlands and the discharge of faecal waste from broken sewers that compromise biodiversity and ecosystem balances. This chapter is contributing knowledge of climate change resilience and adaptation by communities within the framework of new institutional and ecological economics.

Equivalent Model of Photovoltaic Power Station Considering Different Generation Units’ Fault Current Contributions

The fault current calculation model of photovoltaic (PV) power stations is usually treated as a capacity weighted equivalent model of a single PV generation unit (PVGU). However, in the same PV power station, different PVGUs have various fault current characteristics. As a result, there are significant differences in fault current characteristics between a PVGU and a PV power station. It means that the existing capacity weighted equivalent model cannot be used for accurately describing the fault current contributions from a practical PV power station. In this paper, the fault behaviors of the PVGUs located at different access points of a PV power station are firstly analyzed. The difference in PVGUs’ fault current contributions is identified and reflected with the activation states of current limiters that are employed for PV inverters. The activation states are represented by a theoretical expression so as to distinguish the PVGUs’ fault contributions. Further, based on the proposed theoretical expression, a novel algorithm is developed for sorting all PVGUs included in a PV power station. The multi-machine calculation model is deduced in order to exactly express the fault current contribution from a PV station. Finally, some simulation tests are conducted. The tested results verify the effectiveness of the proposed calculation model. It can provide support for calculating the protection setting of power grid connected with large-scale PV stations.

Investigation of the Influence of Gas Turbine Power Stations on the Quality of Electric Energy in the Associated Petroleum Gas Utilization

The problem of the quality of electric energy in the utilization of petroleum gas is considered. The article presents the results of the development of a mathematical description of power supply systems with gas turbine power stations based on two-shaft gas turbine units. The typical power distribution scheme of a gas turbine power station is given. The joint analysis of the generation modes of the gas turbine power station and the detected deviations of the power quality indicators values was carried out. The influence of the used mode on the power quality indicators is determined. As a result, the factors of operation of a gas turbine power station that affects power quality are identified, and recommendations for their elimination are given.

A Hybrid Novel Fuzzy MCDM Method for Comprehensive Performance Evaluation of Pumped Storage Power Station in China

Considering the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, along with their related policies, pumped storage power stations are set to develop quickly in China. The comprehensive performance of pumped storage power stations must urgently be evaluated, which can help investors in decision making and provide a reference for policymakers. In this paper, a hybrid novel fuzzy multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) method combining the fuzzy best worst method (BWM) and fuzzy TOPSIS was proposed for the comprehensive performance evaluation of pumped storage power stations in China. The fuzzy BWM was utilized to determine the criteria weights describing the comprehensive performance of pumped storage power stations, while the fuzzy TOPSIS was used to rank the comprehensive performance of pumped storage power stations. The index system for the comprehensive performance evaluation of pumped storage power stations in China incorporated economic, social, and environmental aspects. The comprehensive performance of four pumped storage power stations in China was empirically evaluated using the proposed hybrid novel fuzzy MCDM method, and the results indicate that pumped storage power station PSPS2 exhibited the best comprehensive performance, followed by pumped storage power stations PSPS1 and PSPS4, whereas pumped storage power station PSPS3 had the worst comprehensive performance. A sensitivity analysis and comparative analysis were also conducted. The results indicate that the proposed hybrid novel fuzzy MCDM method, combining the fuzzy BWM and fuzzy TOPSIS for comprehensive performance evaluation of pumped storage power stations, is robust and effective.

LOCAL STUDIES OF ICE COVER EFFECTS ON DAM GATES

The experience of operation of surface emergency gates in ice-breaking conditions at a number of hydroelectric power plants has shown the insuffi cient eff ectiveness of the methods used to combat freezing of structures. The rules for technical operation of spillway dam gates in winter provide for heating of structures by slots, threshold and skin in conjunction with measures to maintain mines before construction. However, measures to heat gates and build mines are not always suffi ciently justifi ed and justifi ed. In order to obtain full-scale data and scientifi c information for the development of recommendations on operating and accounting modes during design, full-scale studies of stresses and defl ections in the load-bearing elements of the watershed gate of the hydroelectric power station were carried out. This article presents the results of fi eld studies in comparison with calculated values. As a result of the studies, information on the static operation of fl at gates in winter conditions is obtained, which is of theoretical and practical interest. The materials can be used to clarify technical operation rules and to clarify regulatory documents for the design of hydromechanical equipment at hydroelectric power stations.
