A facile, one-pot solvent-mediated hydrothermal process was adopted to prepare nickel sulfide nanoparticles decorated on reduced graphene oxide (NixSy/rGO) as electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The designed solvent (ethylene glycol and deionized water) played a decisive role in controlling both crystalline phase and morphology of NixSy/rGO composites, leading to pure [Formula: see text]-NiS nanoparticles uniformly distributed on rGO sheets under suitable volume ratio of ethylene glycol and deionized water (2:1). The optimized [Formula: see text]-NiS/rGO showed prominent HER catalytic performance with a rather small Tafel slope of 93[Formula: see text]mV/decade and prominent current density of 10[Formula: see text]mA/cm2 at the overpotential of 177[Formula: see text]mV in alkaline environments when compared to pristine [Formula: see text]-NiS and NiS2/rGO catalysts. The excellent catalytic performance and long-term durability even after 8000 cycles confirmed the potential of [Formula: see text]-NiS/rGO composites as efficient electrocatalysts for HER in the alkaline media.

Cubic Cu5FeS4, obtained from a simple refluxing reaction of CuCl, FeCl3 and thiourea in ethylene glycol, showed an optical band gap of 1.25 eV. It can be used as a UV-visible radiation absorber in photovoltaic cells.

We have demonstrated the first ligand free CuI-nanoparticle catalyzed N-arylation of amides/cyclic amides in an ethylene glycol/2-propanol solvent system under mild conditions. This is further extended for one pot synthesis of benzimidazole, and quinazolinone via intermolecular amidation followed by cyclization.

High-quality hydrophobic or hydrophilic ferrofluid based on magnetite ( Fe 3 O 4) nanoparticles can be synthesized by one-pot direct synthesis which involves thermolysis of Iron(III) acetylacetonate, Fe ( acac )3 in hydrophobic or hydrophilic stabilizing agent, respectively. The structure of the nanoparticles dispersed in the ferrofluid was studied using XRD, FTIR, XPS, and TGA analysis, while morphology and size of the nanoparticles were determined by TEM. The magnetic properties of the samples were measured using VSM and SQUID measurement. The results show that oleylamine (OM) and tri(ethylene glycol) (TREG) coated Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles which are well stabilized in hydrophobic and hydrophilic ferrofluid, respectively, are relatively monodisperse, single crystalline and superparamagnetic in nature with the blocking temperature at around 100 K.
