The wear is very difficult to characterize because of its complexity and its measurement phenomenon. Our work is to prepare samples Fan blades, worn, to determine the nature of the wear and damage them. For these reasons, the characterization of these samples was conducted in different microscopic and macroscopic scales. We used non-destructive techniques such as eddy current and penetrant methods. The results obtained allowed us to see the deterioration of fins from one floor to another. These results are directly related to the effects of mechanical, thermal and pressure. It has been, in addition to detecting a different type of damage these fan blades that is the fatigue damage.

Diagnostics is a very important tool of knowledge in the field of historical buildings. In particular, non-destructive techniques allow to deepen the study of the mechanical characteristics of the historical walls without compromising the artistic value of the monumental building. A case study of the use of sonic and impact tests was described, performed using the same instrumented hammer, for the characterization of the masonry walls at the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie at Varoni, one of the churches damaged in the 2016 Amatrice earthquake. Sonic tests showed the presence of a discontinous masonry texture, as well as confirming the ineffectiveness of the strengthening work made by injections of lime mortar. The impact test allowed us to obtain the elastic modulus of the omogeneous stones of the masonry. The results obtained from the non-destructive techniques were confirmed by the flat jacks test carried out on the building, confirming the great potential of the non-destructive diagnostics suitable for analyzing important structural parameters without affecting the preservation of historical masonry structures.

The paper presents a brief review of the main experimental and numerical techniques and standards to investigate and quantify the structural, mechanical, thermal, and acoustic properties of cellular metals. The potential of non-destructive techniques, such as X-ray computed tomography and infrared thermography are also presented.

AbstractAt Ustica island (Palermo, Italy), in the area of Casa dei Francesi, 119 fragments of obsidian artifacts were collected on the surface of an agricultural field at an altitude of 50 m asl. In the same area, until now, scientific literature reports only the presence of late Roman pottery (4th–6th centuries AD), and no evidence has appeared that it could be the site of a prehistoric settlement. The most important prehistoric settlement, the Faraglioni Village (Middle Bronze Age) is located 700 m further north, overlooking the sea. Obsidian provenance analyses, performed on the 119 samples with absolutely non-destructive techniques WD-XRF and SEM-EDS, indicate two sources areas: Lipari (93 samples, 78%) and Pantelleria (26 samples, 22%). Concerning the obsidians from the island of Pantelleria, it was possible to also establish the sub-source of Salto la Vecchia. The typological and functional analyses of the 119 obsidian fragments point out that 115 are debitages, some of which show evidence of percussion bulbs, and only 4 are tools with micro-retouching. This work focuses on the geochemical and typological characterization of the obsidian assemblage collected, the characteristics of which suggest the existence of a prehistoric settlement in the area of the Casa dei Francesi or nearby.

Thermoelectric power coefficient measurement techniques have been developed for numerous applications to guarantee material integrity by providing a non-destructive electronic property correlation to material microstructure, phase stability, specific solute additions, and lattice strain. How the electron concentration, the effective mass, and the dominating scattering mechanisms allow for non-destructive evaluation of materials will be described. Because thermoelectric power (TEP) is dependent upon numerous variables, additional non-destructive techniques are necessary to further characterize or classify the material or weldment. The concept of an electronic metallography laboratory is developed using additional collaborative NDE technologies.

The usability of any material hinges upon its stability over time. One of the major concerns, focusing on polymeric materials, is the degradation they face during their service life. The degradation mechanisms are deeply influenced by the aging temperature to which the material is subjected. In this paper, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) flat specimens were thermally aged under two different temperatures (90 °C and 110 °C) and analyzed. Specimens were characterized through both the most common mechanical and chemical measurements techniques (e.g., tensile stress, thermal analyses, oxidation induction time) and electrical measurements (dielectric spectroscopy, in particular), which are examples of non-destructive techniques. As a result, a very spread characterization of the polyethylene-based materials was obtained and a very good correlation was found to exist between these different techniques, highlighting the possibility of following the aging degradation development of polymers through electrical non-destructive techniques.
