Ce, Nd and Gd doped strontium titanate nanomaterial was prepared by a sol-gel method. Effects of transition metals doping on photocatalytic activities of the prepared materials were studied. The pure strontium titanate had photocatalytic degradation activity of 31.0%. The maximum degradation rate happened at Ce content of 20% and nearly 32.5% of the initial methyl orange was degraded on the material after 30 min of irradiation. Although there was a slight variation of photocatalytic degradation rate with the increasing Nd doping content, the materials doped with Nd had lower photocatalytic activity compared with pure strontium titanate. Nearly all the samples doped with Gd in the range up to 30% had much lower activity that the pure strontium titanate.

In order to improve the efficiency of TiO2, material with large surface area such as mesoporous silica is usually used as a support. In this study, the TiO2 was dispersed on mesoporous silica, MCM-41 by an impregnation method, meanwhile the bulk TiO2 was prepared by sol gel method. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the intensities of diffraction peaks for MCM-41 decreased with the increase of the TiO2 loading, suggesting that the higher loading amount of TiO2 might lead to less ordered structure of MCM-41. The successful addition of TiO2 on MCM-41 was also confirmed from the fluorescence spectra, which the emission intensities of TiO2 and MCM-41 increased and decreased, respectively, with the increase of TiO2 loading on the MCM-41. The activities were compared between the bulk and dispersed TiO2 for photocatalytic oxidation of hexanol. Both bulk and dispersed TiO2 on MCM-41 showed good photocatalytic activity, while the MCM-41 did not show photocatalytic activity. Since the efficiency of photocatalyst can be defined by its respective turnover number (TON), the comparison between bulk and dispersed TiO2 on MCM-41 was made based on their TON values. It was revealed that the dispersed TiO2 on the MCM-41 with 5 wt% of TiO2 loading was the most efficient photocatalyst among all the samples.

The fluorine-modified mesoporous silica HMS(F20) was synthesized by using the mixture of TEFS(SiF(OC2H5)3) and TEOS(Si(OC2H5)4) as the silica source. The specific surface and pore size distribution were characterized by N2 adsorption and the hydrophilic-hydrophobic property was measured by water adsorption. The photocatalytic activities of TiO2 nanoparticles loaded on HMF(F20) and HMS were investigated for the degradation of iso-butanol diluted in water. The results show that the fluorine-modified mesoporous silica HMS(F20) has higher hydrophobic property than HMS and the TiO2/HMS(F20) exhibits the higher photocatalytic activity than TiO2/HMS. The hydrophobic mesopores benefit the condensation of hydrophobic organic compounds diluted in water, which results in higher photocatalytic degradation efficiency.
