Synergetic effect and mechanism between propylene carbonate and polymer rich in ester and ether groups for CO2 physical absorption

The development of efficient, inexpensive, and nontoxic catalysts for cycloaddition of CO2 with epoxides to produce five-membered cyclic carbonates is a very interesting topic. In this work, cycloaddition of CO2 with propylene oxide (PO) to produce propylene carbonate (PC) catalyzed by potassium halides (KCl, KBr, and KI) in the presence of cucurbit[6]uril (CB[6]) was studied at various conditions. It was discovered that the potassium halides and CB[6] had excellent synergetic effect in promoting the reaction, and the KI/CB[6] catalytic system was the most efficient among them. The decrease of the activity and selectivity of KI/CB[6] was negligible after the catalytic system was reused five times. Further study indicated that the KI/CB[6] catalytic system was also very active and selective for the cycloaddition of CO2 with other epoxides, such as glycidyl phenyl ether, epichlorohydrin, and styrene oxide. The mechanism for the synergetic effect of KI and CB[6] was also discussed.

Expressions have been derived for four possible transfer functions of a model of physical absorption of a poorly soluble gas in a packed bed column. The model has been based on axially dispersed flow of gas, plug flow of liquid through stagnant and dynamic regions and interfacial transport of the absorbed component. The obtained transfer functions have been transformed into the frequency domain and their amplitude ratios and phase lags have been evaluated using the complex arithmetic feature of the EC-1033 computer. Two of the derived transfer functions have been found directly applicable for processing of experimental data. Of the remaining two one is useable with the limitations to absorption on a shallow layer of packing, the other is entirely worthless for the case of poorly soluble gases.

An experimental method and technique are described in the paper of simultaneous detection of the transfer functions outlet-gas-stream-to-inlet-gas-stream and outlet-liquid-stream-to-inlet-gas-stream for the absorption of oxygen into water in a counter-current packed bed column. Both transfer functions were simultaneously monitored by means of three oxygen electrodes operating on the polarographic principle. The signals of these electrodes were processed in three steps to yield parameters of the model of physical absorption of gas. The first step was on-line evaluation of the Fourier coefficients of the principal harmonic component in all three monitored streams. The second step was the calculation of the frequency characteristics of both transfer functions while the third step yielded parameters of the model by optimization in the frequency domain. The method permits simultaneous evaluation of the parameters of the flow of both phases in the column and the interfacial transfer of oxygen.

Rational design and development of the electrodes with high-mass loading yet maintaining the excellent electrochemical properties are significant for a variety of electrochemical energy storage applications. In comparison with the slurry-casted electrode, herein, a hierarchically porous activated carbon (HPAC) electrode with higher mass loading (8.3 ± 0.2 mg/cm2) is successfully prepared. The pouch-type symmetric device (1 cell) with the propylene carbonate-based electrolyte shows the rate capability (7.1 F at 1 mA/cm2 and 4.8 F at 10 mA/cm2) and the cycling stability (83% at 12,000 cycles). On the other hand, an initial discharge capacitance of 32.4 F and the capacitance retention of 96% after 30,000 cycles are delivered from a pouch-type symmetric supercapacitor (five cells). The corresponding electrochemical performances are attributed to the fascinating properties of the HPAC and the synergistic features of the resulting electrode.

Abstract To exploit the potential of ecological intensification during sunflower cropping, it is crucial to understand the potential synergies between crop management and ecosystem services. We therefore examined the effect of pollination intensification on sunflower yield and productivity under various levels of soil fertilization over two seasons in the eastern Free State, South Africa. We manipulated soil fertility with fertilizer applications and pollination with exclusion bags. We found a synergetic effect between pollination and soil fertilization whereby increasing pollination intensity led to a far higher impact on sunflower yield when the soil had been fertilized. Specifically, the intensification of insect pollination increased seed yield by approximately 0.4 ton/ha on nutrient poor soil and by approximately 1.7 ton/ha on moderately fertilized soil. Our findings suggest that sunflower crops on adequate balanced soil fertility will receive abundant insect pollination and may gain more from both synergies than crops grown in areas with degraded soil fertility.
