The use of natural fibres at high percentages of loading in thermoplastic composites for the production of sustainable and green materials in consumer goods, furniture, automotive industry and construction industry is encourage. Several studies have been conducted by many researchers to improve the mechanical properties of the fibres and the fibre-matrix interface for better bonding and load transfer especially when high fibre loading is used. The natural fibre hydrophilic properties make the poor interface and poor resistance to moisture absorption when used to reinforce hydrophobic matrices. Therefore, this study investigates the effects of different surface treatment of kenaf bast fibre on the flexural strength of kenaf polyethylene composite (KPC). These composites, made using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) as the matrix polymer, kenaf core and kenaf bast fibre as the reinforcing filler at different percentages of filler and maleic anhydride grafted polyethylene (MAPE) as compatibilizing agents. Overall, KPCs with bast fibre treated with 0.06M MgCl2 and 0.06M NaOH enhanced the flexural strength of the composites as compared to untreated bast fibre in the composite. Besides, the flexural properties of the KPCs significantly decreased with increasing kenaf bast fibre content, due to the reduction of interface bond between the fibre and matrix.

: The objective of this research is to evaluate the tensile, impact and flexural properties of flax fiber and basalt powder filled polyester composite. Flax fiber is one of the predominant reinforcement natural fiber which possess good mechanical properties and addition of basalt powder as a filler provides additional support to the composite. The Composites are prepared using flax fiber arranged in 10 layers with varying weight percentage of the basalt powder as 5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.%, 20 wt.%, 25 wt.% and 30 wt.% respectively. From the results it is inferred that the composite combination 10 Layers of flax / 5 wt.%, basalt Powder absorbs more tensile load of 145 MPa. Also, for the same combination maximum flexural strength is about 60 MPa. Interestingly in the case of impact strength more energy was absorbed by 10 layers of flax and 30 wt.% of basalt powder. In addition, the failure mechanism of the composites also discussed briefly using SEM studies.

Abstract The reinforcing effect of graphene oxide (GO) in enhancing the flexural strength and flexural modulus of aramid fiber (AF)/epoxy composites were investigated with GO-AFs at a weight fraction of 0.1-0.7%. The flexural strength and flexural modulus of the composite reached 87.16 MPa and 1054.7 MPa, respectively, which were about 21.19% and 40.86% higher than those of the pure epoxy resin, respectively. In addition, the flexural properties and interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of composite reinforced by GO-AFs were much higher than the composites reinforced by AFs due to GO improved the interfacial bonding between the reinforcement material and matrix.
